A 250 2 stroke cannot compete against the 450Fs in Pro lever competition.

-If you compared cc of the 125 to 250F, that is about 125cc difference.
-If you compared cc of the 250 to 450F is 200cc. It should be 125 cc, making the 2 stroke a 325 compared to a 450F. Now that would be competitive.
-If you subtracted 200cc from the 250Fs then you would be racing a 50 cc 2 stroke against a 250F.

But as we know, the AMA could care less. All they want is to make the Big 4 happy.

"...seriously though. the magazines are going to love these new bikes..."

All the magazines except MXA and Dirt Bike. AMA hates these bikes, especially the 150. If they were a Japanese brand then they would love it (since the AMA is controlled by the Big 4). The Big 4 controls everything about MXA and Dirt Bike and simply won't let them do much coverage of the 150 or pit it against any of the 250Fs. MXA and Dirt Bike will usually test this bike by itself or with the 250SX, but never against a Japanese 250F. In fact, they usually provide hop up articles for he YZ125 and 250 and leave out the 150 on purpose. Once we realize that Daisy-High Torque Publishing is the enemy the better.

I have sent a copy of this reply to MXA and Dirt Bike (one of about 50), which they will never reply since they are scared to

There was one in Australia, but nothing here in the US. The test riders even consisted of a girl and no expert level riders.
Yes, but I found it to be a good test, because something like 5 out of 6 riders came out of that test with 2 to 3 seconds faster lap times on the 144

Yeah, it was informative. I just wish our stupid magazines would publish a test like this. Of course we know that everyone except Dirt Rider is scared of this.

If the AMA would simply allow the 144s to compete with the 250Fs and big bore 250s (up to 344cc) to compete with the 450Fs then they could compete. Of course we know that will never happen, and you will never see MXA test these bikes against each other. But of course, everyone wants to see them tested anyway.

Yeah, its a good article, but you won't ever see them test it against a 4-stroke. Same thing with a big bore 125 or 150.

I am still waiting to hear back from Jimmy Lewis at Dirt Rider at what kind of budget this shootout will have. But from the responses I have received from this forum and several others, it seems that a stock shootout is what the majority of readers want, and the most fair way to compare the bikes. Then have a modified shootout if the budget permits.

The 250 two stroke cannot compete against the factory 450s. Nick Wey was a hold out for awhile but couldn't keep the pace on it. I wish the AMA would allow at least up to 280cc in the 450s and 144cc in the 250Fs. Then you would see the tide change.

The 144 is legal in pro racing as of last year unless they changed the rules again for 2010 it is 144cc in pro racing and 155cc in amtr.

Are you sure of this? I know the AMA rulebook only allowed up to 125cc 2 stroke in the 250F class. If this is changed then this will be a monumental change. I hope you're right, and I would be very interested to hear where you got this info.

As far as the shootout, I initially wanted to see this as stock against stock. But I looked up the prices and there is about $1000 difference between the 4 stroke and 2 stroke. I think it would be reasonable to apply this to the 2 strokes. Here is a cost breakdown:

250Fs-
SXF 7198
KXF 6999
RMZ 6699
YZF 6990
CRF 7199
144s-
SX 6198
YZ125 6585 (6090 plus bore/ porting head mods 495 - Eric Gorr)

According to Pro Circuit, here is the price break down:

Motor - porting and head mods
4 stroke 549.95
2 stroke 329.95

Pipe and Silencer
4 stroke 779.95
2 stroke 349.90

I think we can safely say that the average price difference between a 4 stroke and a 2 stroke is $1000. I think that several people have mentioned that the price difference between the two should be applied to the 2 stroke. It sounds like the consensus would be to have the 2 strokes ported w/head mods and pipe/silencer. This would leave $322 for the KTM and $156 for the YZ. This would be enough for the suspension fo rthe KTM and limited funds for the YZ.

General Two Stroke Talk / Dirt Rider Mag 144s vs 250Fs
« on: June 15, 2010, 11:39:02 AM »
I posted a couple of weeks ago about Dirt Rider mag pursuing a shootout including a YZ144 and KTM150 against the Big 5 250Fs.

The question now is -
How much modifications should be done on the bikes?
Who should do the work?
Should there be a price cap? If so, how much?

I know we kind of went over this earlier but it is now in the final stage before getting the bikes together.

This is my take on this:

The bikes should remain stock except for exhaust (or no exhaust for that matter). I realize that the KTM150 and YZ144 could be ported with head mods for the price difference between them and the 4 strokes, but I don't think this would set up a fair playing field. I don't think it really matters who works on these bikes if we decide they could be modified.

General Two Stroke Talk / 150/ 144 vs 250Fs shootout!

Dirt Rider Magazine Or Dirtrider.com

I sent an email to several magazines (including at least 5 online requests to MXA) to ask them to do the 144cc against the 250Fs and Dirt Rider (Jimmy Lewis) replied to me in an email. He didn't commit to do the test but said that it would be fun since he would get to ride the 2 strokes. I guess the point is that Dirt Rider actually responded within about 48hours of my submission. Anyway, I will keep ya'll posted on the outcome. I think it is totally cool that I actually got a response.

05/58/2010 - I have talked to Jimmy Lewis and he is not only excited about it, but he is committed to it. He has started getting everything together and I sjhould here something soon as to when it is coming out. I'll keep everyone updated!

General Two Stroke Talk / Re: A Little Info ON The New MAICO'S!

OOps! Big mistake there with the mags bud! MXA is the most 2 Stroke Friendly magazine.

The Anti 2 Stroke magazine you are thinking of is Transworld Motocross, OR "Transworld Mower-Cross" for short. Don and his crew apparently love the flatulent burble of the tractor bikes siting on the line. "Sschmooo!....Sschmooo's,

Jody and the MXA crew are 2 Stroke Soldiers! Motocross Action is first in line when it comes to acknowleging the fact that there's still an alternative to the 4 stroke pushers and their steroided, puffed up play bikes.

Thanks,

How many shootouts have you seen of a 150SX included in the 250F shootouts? None, ever. How many tests have you seen of the TM bikes, Husky, KTMs with the same coverage and exposure as the 4 strokes? How much coverage on the Maicos? I know these bikes have been a little quirky over the years, but there as been a noticeable push by MXA to effectively eliminate 2strokes from their mag. Sure they put out the article of the 2Stroke Manifesto, but that was it. Everything else in their mag paints 2strokes out as some mystical far gone and forgotten relic. MXA has completely buckled to the Big 4. They will never include the 150 2stroke against the 250Fs or an aluminum frame 500 against the 450Fs in a shootout because this would slam the factories and not fit in to MXA's view of the current status of motocross. There are lines that MXA will simply not cross and one of those is a completely objective on-going report of the status of 2strokes. I have been an avid reader of MXA for more than 10 years and they are a business that has to make a profit - job number one. They are committed to reporting and giving an in-depth view of the current fad at the time (up to a point). When this reporting directly conflicts with the business plans of major corporations (Big 4) then they have to limit their reporting.

That's kind of a long answer for - MXA says they are pro 2stroke but won't give them the time of day.
MXA is the enemy of the two stroke.

Bummer, I wish it was a factory thing. Oh well, wishfully thinking. I still agree that the 4 strokes are a fad. Hopefully, this bike will at least stir a buzz.
