General Two Stroke Talk / 2012 Huskys, a return of the CR125
« on: August 29, 2011, 01:24:30 PM »
MXA did a report on the 2012 Husky lineup (http://www.motocrossactionmag.com/Main/News/FIRST-LOOK-2012-HUSQVARNA-MOTORCYCLES-14-DIFFERENT-8216.aspx). Included in this lineup is the CR125 and a WR125.

Each of these come with a 144cc bolt on kit included for free, with a cost of $5999 for the bike. While I love the 144s, it is good to see a return to the 125.

How cool would it be to see a shootout that included these:

General Two Stroke Talk / We need a boycott
« on: August 10, 2011, 09:08:29 PM »
I think a boycott of Honda, Suzuki, and Kawasaki would be a good test to see if they value sales, even though they say pride runs their company. I can imagine a lot of cars, lawnmower, motorcycle, apparel, and related items would make a dent in their sales and company image. Look at what happened to Disney with the Christian boycott. The same thing happened to Proctor & Gamble. When that image is tarnished, then there is a real impact that follows.

Just a thought.

General Two Stroke Talk / Jody 2-stroke, MXA at it again
« on: July 06, 2011, 05:42:37 AM »
Jody Weisel posted an update to his 2-stroke manifesto. It's definitely a good read, that will ruffle the feathers of 4-strokers for sure:

General Two Stroke Talk / RM250 for 2012 ('08 model)
« on: June 21, 2011, 04:39:14 AM »
I found this from Twostroke Todd. It's the link to Suzuki's website for 2012 models. The 2008 RM250 is listed in the lineup for 2012:

General Two Stroke Talk / Petition Update
« on: April 29, 2011, 08:53:27 AM »
Well, the petition continues to rise - up to 4260!

However, the stiffness from the OEMS does to. Here's the latest reply from Al Ludington:

Sorry for the delayed reply. I've been somewhere racing every weekend. I just got back from the flat track race in Salinas and I'm off to Miller in a couple of days. No rest for the weary, etc. I'll have to tell you Mark, I'm not gaining much traction on my side of things. As attractive as the idea is, as much more economically feasible of a way to go racing as it is, and as logical as it seems on the surface I feel there are a lot of underlying issues going against us here.

It would probably not be in my best interests to outline what we are up against in an email but I know you're a clever guy and can read between the lines. The o.e.m 's have a strong voice and a lot of vested interests in our series. Until it makes sense to them I fear we will have a tough battle on our hands. Your proposal is sound and solid. Have you tried sending the petition to the various manufacturers and race teams? Maybe we need to work this from the bottom up.

Anyway, from my side I'll push it to Kevin, Davey, and the other involved parties when and where I can. Hopefully we will find an open window of opportunity sooner rather than later. It's a noble goal so hang in there.

AMA Pro Racing

I'm debating how to proceed further, since I haven't really considered putting together a proposal to the OEMs and teams.

General Two Stroke Talk / 2-stroke World Championship - MXA
« on: March 31, 2011, 07:22:13 AM »
Here's a pretty good write-up by MXA on this weekends's 2-stroke race.

http://www.motocrossactionmag.com/Main/News/WHO-WILL-WIN-THIS-WEEKENDS-WORLD-TWOSTROKE-MOTOCRO-6823.aspx

Also, here's some back and forth on the current 2-stroke stuff on VitalMX. Davey Coombs chimed in since the AMA was mentioned and gave his baloney replies. The main topic is about creating a 125 series. MotoGrady made some good pionts about the trouble of getting a wide spread 125 class started even though there is a lot of interest.

General Two Stroke Talk / Maico Int'l No Fear
« on: February 28, 2011, 08:22:16 AM »
Well, it sounds like Maico has a rider and who will wear No Fear clothing. Apparently he will contest in Europe and hopefully we will see this rider here in the states this year according to the article. Still waiting for the bike to appear.

General Two Stroke Talk / Proposal and Petition en-route to AMA
« on: February 14, 2011, 08:41:16 AM »
Finally got the proposal and petition printed out, updated, and sent to the AMA. I would have had it done last week, but had to go to Virginia for the whole week with my job. At any rate, here is the tracking number if you want to track it: 0310 3200 0000 4543 7314. It should get there on Wednesday to AMA's Kevin Crowther at Pickerington, OH. For some reason, I was thinking the AMA was in West Virginia, oh well...

General Two Stroke Talk / Petition Update
« on: February 03, 2011, 11:28:11 AM »
As you know the petition keeps rising steadily.

I have had conversations with several people at the AMA, mainly Davey Coombs. I have gone back and forth with him on the petition and he said that if it was put to a vote for AMA Motocross, that he would vote for it (Of course, he added "if it's written well and makes sense)." Even though his words are a little vague at times, he at least committed to vote for it.

He said to send in the petition and the proposal to the AMA c/o Jeff Crowther and that he would forward it to the AMA Board of Directors, where if they felt the need, they would vote on it.

So, we're sort of back to square one. I should have everything printed out today and sent in tomorrow or early next week. It feels good, though to send a petition of 3700+ signatures and over 265 pages worth of support for this rule change. Over 100 of those pages are comments which are the true voice of American motorcyclers.

As always, I will keep you up to date as soon as I know more. Thanks

General Two Stroke Talk / Petition Comment and article
« on: January 13, 2011, 06:10:40 AM »
Here's a message I received on the petition email today. Its a very interesting article and I've sent an email to Christina Kwan about a possible interview with twostrokemotocross.com about it.

We signed your petition, here's an article that went out on us on MSNBC.

General Two Stroke Talk / Thank You!
« on: January 12, 2011, 09:51:32 AM »
I would like to thank each and every person on here for supporting the petition. It is up to 3460! That is an incredible number. I am preparing to talk to Al Ludington and this is pure ammonition. When everyone says that we are a small majority, or that no one wants a favorable change for 2-strokes in the AMA Pro arena, I can simply point to the petition and the comments and my case is won every time.

Even though its not as easy as a petition, the numbers continue to rise in our favor, and I'm hoping diplomacy and common sense will help our cause as well.

Anyway, thanks again!

General Two Stroke Talk / AMA Petition Update
« on: December 21, 2010, 08:43:37 AM »
The best I know to update everyone on the petition is to include the email traffice between me and Al Ludington. Al was the person who I was directed to when I called the AMA back in July, so he is the official who I have dealt with from the beginning. Even though I wish I could deal with several people and not burden one person down with this, he has probably been the best voice for us than anyone I can think of. I am waiting on a reply back from him, but his mom died last month, so that combined with the holidays has sort of delayed things right now. Here are some of the emails back and forth:

09/28/10 - Hey Al,
I'm just touching base. Hopefully, the Road Racing series has been as successful as Motocross has, especially with the MXDN win.
You know, I mentioned on AMA's Facebook page that I have fully appreciated getting to interact with you guys, and have been treated very well throughout this process. I have told everyone whose following this the same thing. I view the AMA differently than I did before and hopefully I can renew confidence in the AMA, and can calm any unwarranted animosity.
At any rate, the petition is up to about 2450 signatures. Most bills in congress only get about 200 signatures so our petition, in my opinion, is way more than any of us ever expected. Simply put, this change wouldn't hurt anyone and could only help, and give riders a cheaper, competitive racing alternative.
I haven't prepared another proposal, since I think the point has been driven home well enough. But the important point is that this is a win win situation for the riders, fans, and the sport.
Enough said, thanks again for all the effort and all your help!
Talk to you again, Mark Slate

10/20/10 - Good morning,
Hey Al, I'm checking in with you to see how things are going.
The petition is at 2,643 signatures, and has slowed slightly with the initial excitement passed. Many people don't realize the time it takes to effect even a small change.
I've watched the Australian Super X and the results were very indicative of what I think we would see if 2-strokes were allowed in supercross and outdoors. There were three 250 2-strokes in the lites main and they finished 10th-12th. Again, the torquier 4-strokes turned faster lap times than an equal displacement 2-stroke. I also think this would transcend to the 450F class as well, especially with less than equal displacements.
There has been much discussion and speculation from non-factory personnel and promoters who feel their business will suffer as well as their relationships with the factories (namely Honda). There has been no mention of two strokes racing equally with 4-strokes, and it has been hard to make them realize that this rule change is not equal displacement, even though we've seen that 4-strokes are very close to equal displacement 2-strokes.
Here is the reality - Some people will love this and some won't. Honda may get mad, while others will be view this as a chance to get into pro racing when there wasn't a chance before. Some may view it as a chance to save money for their racing budget. Other than monitoring and enforcement of existing AMA rules requiring proper engine displacement, this would place no undue burden on anyone involved, since this doesn't require the factories to meet any new standard or regulation. This will add an excitement to racing, bring racing costs down for the privateer, and bolster a new fan base.
I realize there may be some fear of the unkknown, but I don't see a negative in placing this rule change into effect.
As always, I appreciate your insights and consideration,
Mark Slate

11/12/10 - Checkin in again.
The petition is right around 2700
Review AMA Pro Racing Rule change Section 3.1 2717 Signatures
After reading the comments, most of the peitioners have mentioned "make racing more affordable," and "Good for the sport," as the one chief comments throughout.
Apparently, Motocross Australia is adopting a rule change that would allow 250 2&4 strokes to race together and the same for 450s, but possibly adding a 125 class. The Aussies report that they are only adopting FIM rules which will take effect Jan 1, 2011. I am still researching the FIM rules since I don't have all the facts as of yet.
At any rate, hopefully the proposals and work on this project haven't fallen on deaf ears. I am certainly new to this and was hoping to begin a discussion to not only build a relationship with the AMA, but to also bring up ideas benefitting the sport. I have made some mistakes along the way, but I have genuinely tried to open up a peaceful dialog and hopefully bring the AMA into a good light. There is a lot of respect for the AMA and hopefully my interactions have strenghtened that view.
As always, thanks for all your support and encouragement,
Mark Slate

This was the last email I received from him, so I haven't pressed the issued too hard until after the holidays. I sent him one more email a week later with a link to Dirt Rider's 150SX vs 250F comparison, but haven't heard anything further. It's obvious that this is going to be somewhat of a longer battle than I originally thought. Even though the rule change will not take effect in 2011, this will give us ample time to pursue it for 2012 (I know that sounds a little cheesy, but I think this will help get a resurgence up). The petition is also giving us more weight since it continues to rise.

I will try and keep everyone informed. I'll send him another email and probably make a phone call the week after New Year's.

Thanks,
