General Two Stroke Talk / Info on a 2002 CR250
« on: March 27, 2012, 02:16:59 PM »
Good choice going back to the red plastic, I don't know why so many Honda owners go with all black, must be a Metal Mulisha wanna-be thing...

I'd love to make the drive down from Maine, but no money.  Southwick was always my favorite track when I raced NESC, I got my first trophy there back in 1985.  There were so many 125 Novices back then (90+) that they split them up into 3 separate first motos, then took the top finishers of each 3 and combined them for 1 second moto.  if you didn't finish in the top 13 in the first moto, you went home!!  I got a 2nd and 9th for 4th overall, seems like yesterday...

For Sale / 2005 YZ250
« on: March 25, 2012, 03:18:22 PM »
I'm pretty sure the long rod kits were for the '98 and earlier motors only.  My '98 is 68mm x 68mm, the '99 and up have the 72mm stroke, no need for the long rod.  At least as far as I know...

Technical / Rinaldi tyres.
« on: March 20, 2012, 01:59:17 PM »
I had a different experience with Cheng Shins back in the '80's, the sidewalls were so thin and cheap that the rears would flat if you hit a cigarette butt.  I used to throw them on any used bike I was selling because they were only about $20, but a shiny new tire would add $50-$100 to the sale price.  Never tried (or heard of) the Rinaldis.

Never worn one, I'd rather spend the money on a top quality helmet like my Shoei.

Holy schnikeees!!  That thing looks better than any works bike, I be afraid to get it dirty!!

In the late '80's (I think) a friend of mine had a Yamaha Chappy scooter, I think it was an 80cc.  It had an automatic 3 speed transmission, shifted just like a car.  We took the barrel off an Dremel'ed out the exhaust port and the transfers a little, and that thing was a blast - although 50+ mph on pavement with those fat tires was a little sketchy...

Technical / 05 yz 250 silencer
« on: February 08, 2012, 01:19:37 PM »
I have all sorts of combinations for my '98 YZ250, but it is quite a bit different than your '05 motor.  My favorites are an FMF Gnarly with a Pro-Circuit 296 spark arrestor for woods riding, and an FMF Fatty with a Pro-Circuit 304 for MX.  The silencers don't make much difference over stock, but the pipes really move the power quite a bit in the RPM range.  Stock pipe is quieter (just a little) than the FMF's due to thicker construction.

General Two Stroke Talk / How do you train?
« on: January 17, 2012, 04:20:05 PM »
High Intensity intervals are great on anything, MX bike, bicycle, elliptical, treadmill, etc. - you can get a better workout in less than half the time of steady-state endurance training.  I don't have a strict regiment, I do whatever I feel like when I get to the gym.  If my legs are sore, I work my upper body.  I also like more "functional" type exercises like squat-thrusts (burpees) and Olympic-style weight lifting over single muscle group exercises like bench presses or curls, and plyometrics are killer for quick burst strength and making your lungs burn.

Technical / Yz250 2011 problems
« on: December 22, 2011, 01:56:40 PM »
I have read in a few magazines that the newer YZ250's are jetted pretty lean stock, right on the edge of detonation.  Possibly try a 50/50 mix of leaded race gas and pump gas???

Oldmxer - my birthday is the same day but 8 years after yours, just turned 45.  I'm sure I'll still be riding into my 50's and hopefully 60's, but I doubt still racing.  My knee is so screwed up with arthritis that I will need a total knee replacement in 5 years, 10 max.  Not too good to race on a plastic & metal knee that is held to your bones with screws.....

I think the fuel rules are going to handicap the 2 strokes though....
