Project Two 50 Update 2
« on: April 23, 2010, 11:33:16 AM »
Hi Guys,

Just keeping you up-to-date on what's happening.... we have continued to add some great sponsors for the team. That is great news!!

We have a set of Kayaba factory Suspension on it's way to us from Holland!! Yes, we will be using the factory stuff. It has been built from the factory specifically for Mike and our Suspension guru Jay Rapp will fine tune it during testing. I can't wait for this box to arrive... pictures will be posted asap!!

Some of the sponsors that have joined us include,

Scott USA
O'Neal
Amsoil
Revanche 2 Strokes
MicroBlue Technology
DK Construction
Benster Racing
Get Real Racing
WheelCraft
Twin Air
Renthal
Edmond's Racing

We are so grateful to each and every one of these folks.

In addition quite a few two-stroke fans have been kind enough to make donations to help get this off the ground. You folks are the best!! We finally figured out a way to acknowledge and pay those people back that have been so generous. On the front of the rig, the wrap will have a Project Two 50 logo along with every name of our supporters. Just our small way of saying thank you for your generosity.

If you have not yet made a donation and would like to be a part of this select group of folks, please add to the fund using Paypal at donation@projecttwo50.com or go to the donation module on the site (www.projecttwo50.com)

We are doing this on a real low-budget so every single donation makes a world of difference.

Here's your chance to be a part of the effort to show the world that two-strokes ROCK!!

Thanks!
John

Hey Rota Ash

Fair questions, all of them... I'll start with where we are and where we're headed.

As a guide here is a photo of the bike we'll be using for Project Two 50... it's the bike that Mike raced last year and is now all in pieces.

While not highly modified, the bike has some work done to it. It has a Pro Circuit Pipe/Silencer combo, V-Force Reeds, Phat Head and some mild porting. Of course the suspension has been modded to suit Mike....

Over the past few months we have been attempting to get some bikes through Yamaha. They seem to be dragging us along... so it seems that we're not going to get bikes from them. So we're on our own with that..

Of course we have been working on getting other sponsors as well and have been doing really well.

We have product help with some things. Like what?

There are FMF pipes and silencers on the way. Plus we have HGS pipes and silencers coming from Holland. In addition we have a guy that is designing a custom pipe specifically for Project Two 50. We will test the bike both on the track and the dyno to determine which works best under different conditions.

The cylinder is being ported, cases matched, head modified at our tuner... then the engine goes to Microblue Racing. Everything will be super polished and treated. The last step will be full on ceramic bearings throughout the entire engine. (of course the wheels will be getting a set of ceramic bearings as well.)

The carb will be bored and a divider plate added..  Twin Air supplied us with filters.

As mentioned before we have the suspension coming from the Kayaba factory.

Then we have a set of wheels coming from Wheelcraft LLC which include Excel A/60 rims and Talon Xtra-Light hubs.... we sure could use a tire sponsor!! Anyone know one??

Just so you know I've contacted Dunlop and Michelin... no dice... Sent proposals to Pirelli and Maxxis, have not heard anything yet.

The one thing we really could use is a second bike... for practice and testing.

That's kind of where we are so far... the rest we have to pay out of our own pockets... that's why were asking for some help. So we can put the best effort possible forward.

If you know anyone that would like to help out with this project, please point them towards our site. It's a great opportunity for a company to get some amazing media coverage at a very reasonable price with a fantastic ROI. Thank you!

It would be good to see dyno results once you have done them.
Any chance you can post them ?
Good luck with the project.

That really depends on a few things.... if we get significantly higher results than we are expecting, we may not publish the dyno results at least until after the Nationals.

I am working on a YZ250 pipe dyno test with lots of charts, it's a bunch of work compiling everything and writing the story while working on everything else....

Thank you!

If nothing else, try to get at least one of the dyno runs on film.  I'm sure it would be quite a howl.

Is this Maico a 440 or only a 400?  Well in all the confusion, I forgot myself.
But considering this is a 1978 Magnum, the best-handling bike in the world, you have to ask yourself one question.
Do you feel lucky, punk?

I would duggest Motosport.com's Artrax tires, but I can't, they just wouldn't measure up, but a review of the tires are coming soon
I'd rather be riding...

Oh, and John, can you please refrain from using the pro circuit stuff, please use fmf, fmf has been so loyal to two strokes, and pro circuit just hasn't.

The Pro Circuit pipe was on the bike from last year....

Now we are sponsored by FMF, we will be using their stuff. I agree with you 100% FMF supports two-strokes and we support FMF... in fact I'm wearing my "I Love 2 Strokes" FMF shirt right now!

Hey 2T Institute - I had no idea that you had signed up on this forum!!

Hey guys, this man knows his stuff!! If we had time to do all the testing for the June 5th (and of course a bunch more greenbacks) we would follow a bunch of 2T Institute's ideas and suggestions. I can tell you that we will be testing all of them for the 2011 season.

My illusion is that we will end up with a machine that will be very competitive against the tractors... maybe even faster in some cases...

Yep he sure is, i think i dragged him over from another forum we post on, and yes this man fully know's his sh*t.
I'd have him build me a pipe in a second if i had the spare $.
I was wondering if thats who you had building your chamber.
Hey 2T institute you should post up some pics of your other chambers they works of art i reckon.

Well, it sounds like we have a proper scientist in the forums.  I remember the last one we had... fairly angry sort of guy I seem to recall.

It's a part of the job description. Yeah I'll post up a few pics, I don't have that many dedicated MX pics, and thanks for the kind words TotalNZ(getting cold there yet??).Well you know the help you can call on John ;)
I don't think it will be just a matter of 'more' this or that but a case of 'optimising' the engine to what the rider wants, speaking to Todd(which was handy BTW) he said Mike has already topped out in 5th but can't run lower gearing because of acceleration being compromised. If you can get higher top speeds without loosing mid corner to corner exit speed you will do very well I think. Having no guess work with either engine or suspension will be worth a few tenths a lap.You will inevitably say on thw way home "what we should have done is........" minamize that sort of thing is helpful also.
Oh well that pipe won't make it's self................................ ;D

2T - I agree that the whole process will be about optimizing all the pieces to make a cohesive whole. I'm glad that you spoke to Todd, he has been by Mike's side since the beginning and probably knows what Mike needs better then he does!

Sent a crank to Craig, which will be followed by the rest of the engine parts for treating and bearings. Picked up a spare cylinder and head on E-bay which will be modded a bit differently. Ordered some Wosner piston kits also being sent to Craig....

Still waiting on the pipes from FMF and HGS. When your finished with your design we will have the pipe built by a company here... Looking forward to seeing your handi-work.

Speak to you soon!
