hey guys, my dad is bringing home a 79 yz250 just like he had when he was a kid, and it is likely to need some parts, could you guys point me in the direction of some good vintage parts and restoration websites??

we plan to make a racer out of it and not a museum piece so we will need some good places to go for parts

please let me know!!

northwest vintage cycle parts (nwvcp.com)

for yamaha OEM parts try  powersportsplus.com

here are some pics, he literally just brought it home

the bike has rebuilt forks and shock, new wheel bearings in the wheels, the only thing wrong with it really is that it needs a new chain roller because its rubbing on the frame, and that the gas tank needs to be flushed and the carb needs to be cleaned, and it needs a front tire. it kicks over fine with good comp. but before we try and ride it we need to get the chain thing figured out

other than those things the bike is in great shape, i was expecting a pile when he brought it home, we got it for 1 grand, it has the title, a old magazine from europe that has the bike on the cover (the bike was white in europe in 79, the only year they were white) and he have my dad some nice vintage yamaha riding pants, and a few other little things, like air filter/oil and some little parts

i'll keep you guys up on the bike, we plan to do some cool things with this,

i think its a answer silencer but i'm not sure bc there is no logo or sticker on it, an the front number plate isn't the correct one

we plan to race this bike, so it will not be a museum piece, and i think it will be a cool thing to do, like i said my dad had one of these this exact year when he was 19 and he always wanted to find one again, he wanted to have a newer one and one that he had way back when, it'll be cool because we have a 06 yz, and now we have this 79 yz, he says if he ever goes down to one bike, the new one is going to be sold and he's keeping the 79 until he absolutely has to get rid of it, which i doubt will ever happen

let me know what you think!

the guy said that we bought it from said he bought it from a collector, rode it for about a year, and then let it sit for 4 years in his air conditioned garage. He said it ran just fine before he let it sit, and i have no doubts about that. I'm sure when we put new gas/clean the carb and possibly a new spark plug it'll run like a top, my dad was smiling like a little kid when he brought it home, he left at 6 this morning to go pick it up, it was about 3.5 hours away from us. he took a half day off at work just to go get it before anybody else could lol

thanks!

one thing we found was that the bracket that holds the lower chain roller, has broken off, we are going to get the frame welded and a bracket made, so we can ride it, as of now, the chain is rubbing on the frame, which is not good

Awesome bike . your Dad looks pretty pleased with his purchase  :D .

That thing looks very clean and I love the fact its not going to be a museum piece or parted out . I know parting them out is a double edged sword but i hate to see bikes taken apart and sold off part by part . i'd rather keep it a bike and ride/enjoy it . I want a couple of older vintage bikes 1)yz 490 2) any mid 80's 250 kx,yz,rm,cr and the will be ridden no doubt . The 250 will probably take over as my daily ride , I cant wait to see everyones reaction to a 15-20 year old bike being able to stay right next to their 2009+ 450's  >:-D >:-D >:-D

haha ya, that's the main thing that my dad was saying, that if he bought an old bike, especially one that he used to ride whenever wheels were square, that he was going to ride it, and not just have it as a show piece. He said he's going to ride it until there are no parts available for it, then he'll clean it up and let it sit
