Revived for awesomeness, even if they've never posted since!

I have an 05. What is the difference between an 01 engine to an 07 engine. I find my bike a real handful compared to my yz 250 01 smoker. But my Cr is a fully worked 310 cc smoker so I am curious as to what the difference is.

In 2002 and up til 2007, Honda reworked their two stroke motocrossers and came out with a case reed engine. It simply wasn't as good as 2001 and prior powerband wise. I can't speak for peak power though. But the powerband wasn't as good and because they were going for the fourstroke movement, it never really got reworked.

Sweet bike there, lots of trick parts. I ride an 06 CR250R and love the bike, other than a lack of nice roll on low end. As long as you dont get lazy and ride it hard the bike is a very quick way around a motocross track. The newer case reed motor has a ton of potential and there are a lot of savvy tuners who can really make that bike rip. I agree that Honda gave up on this design in lieu of the four strokes but there are lots of tuners that know just what to do with that engine. I just run a FMF fatty and a short can with a V force reed and other than jetting and a twin air the motor is stock and I am very happy with the power on the tracks I ride. I am also going to pick up a keihin 38mm airstriker as this is one mod that really seems to work well and is much easier to jet.

BTW, the A kit suspension was an awesome bonus, I've known people to spend more than that on used A kits. I picked up my bike for a song, much cheaper than my son's CRF250 and its twice the bike.

there is a question in the newest mxa about the 01 vs 07 cr engine...which one would they use if money wasnt issue and they went with the 07....it was in the ask the expert section...they didnt elaborate too much, but i guess a good builder can make the 07 better than the 01....

Without a doubt it has more potential, but the 01 was better off the shoowroom floor.

MXA seems contradictory then, as they labeled the Service Honda CR250AF as "The bike Honda should be building".  It uses an 01 engine and 00 carb.
