KTM does a pretty good job with its XC's.  Just ride it and see where you feel it is lacking, go from there.

Good choice:

Of course I don't have a problem, I'm merely a professional. And in that capacity I can tell you why the KTM 250 XC is quite possibly the single best dirt bike being produced. This middle-displacement, lightweight, high-performance, multi-tasking ride is simplistic and utopian beyond what I could write here or explain to anyone with a closed mind-for them there must be a test ride. But if you're considering just one motorcycle to accomplish whatever you desire in your riding requirements, this is the best way to get started and the best motorcycle to recommend if you want your advice to be credible. Sure, if you have a more specific purpose for your bike, there may be a better machine to recommend, but as a blanket suggestion, you can't go wrong with the multi-tasking two-stroke KTM XC.

I'd ride it 1st, and see how it suits your style.  KTM's can be tuned to suit your riding style.  The power valve can be adjusted with the different springs supplied in the kit.  I like the red spring which opens the valve sooner, boosting the lower power.  Jetting also makes a big difference in how the bike reacts.  Then there is all the differnt suspension adjustments that can be made

2 stoke is easyer and cheaper to adjust to your comfort and wishes. You can switch PV springs, play around with exhausts, adjust the squish, add some flywheel weight, etc.
Allot of options to suit the bike to your needs without spending thousands of dollars.

Bigair, I find this post quite interesting...   Guess we wore you down, or maybe the 250F did? Anyways, my 07 250XCW was pretty grunty.  As far as turning, uh, duh, LOL. I think we've told you the 2 strokes will turn circles around the 4 stroke. Ha ha.  I don't think you need the head done quite yet. Ride it, and see how you like it. You also need to get the handlebar switch for the ignition. It is very feelable. So you will notice a change if you really know bikes, one is great for comparison to a 4 stroke, and the other lets you do more of a 2 stroke style.  All while on the fly.  The guy I sold mine too, just happened to come in my office on Monday and praise how much he loves it. Has sold off his 4 strokes now.  If you are gonna do work on the motor, I'd say wait and just go to the 300 cylinder and MikeS head when you are ready.

You know what it does to 2 strokes but I sure would like to know? I know for a fact that my KTM-300xc will smoke the crap out of these modern 450f 4-strokes!....... 8) ;) 8)

A little more pounds though. Gotta admit it.  I'd bet you might reconsider if you rode a well built 2012 300 vs that 505. Then you wouldn't need two bikes at all. Just one would be the best of all worlds.

You must have the fastest 300 on the planet. :o
My 300 is only AS quick as a 450.
Maybe I need it tuned. :-X

I'd be willing to bet on a plane drag, the 2 stroke woud beat the 450F.  I believe (I could be wrong) the 300 has more hp and less weight. That is all that matters in quarter mile time.

I have found in a straight up drag race there is not much between the 2 bikes.
The TM is slightly quicker but I wouldn't say it "smokes" the 450.
Just keeping it real. :)
