2010 KTM 250sx any good?
« on: June 22, 2010, 03:36:17 AM »
Ok im new to this forum and not sure this has been discussed before. Its been a few years but im getting back into riding again and im interested in getting a new bike. The bike im keen on is the 2010 KTM 250SX. Just after some feed back on this model, eg build quality, any faults, what to look out for and basic reliability. I plan on buying brand new and bike is going to be a keeper for many years. So any feed back (good or bad ) would greatly appreciated

I have the 09 250sx, which is pretty much the same bike, and I love it. I had an 05 YZ250 before this one and the 250SX was head and shoulders better. Super strong power that lifts the front tire off the ground out of every corner. I think it handles good for moto, but I needed some stiffer springs for my 200 pounds. It doesnt eat alot of Premix because the manual recomends 60:1 oil mix, which I run. It comes loaded with trick stuff like billet triple clamps and the V force reed cage.

I havent had 1 issue in the 15 months I've owned it.

The one mod that I and MXA suggest is put an FMF or Pro circuit silencer on it. It sounds better, and adds alot of top.

If I were you I would hold out for the 2011 and get the new bodywork

Agreed, I had a chance to at least sit on one of those recently. It felt a _lot_ smaller (that was not the right word.. hmm, slimmer perhaps) than my '06, more or less like a 125.

Unfortunately I'll have to keep the '06 for a while... it was tempting though.

After having blown up two YZ250F's, a friend asked me what he could buy his son that "wouldn't grenade". That 07 250SX has been bulletproof.

KTM's come with a host of items that many put on their machines through the after market, plus the come standard with some pretty trick components, example a hydraulic clutch.  Some parts are more expensive than the Jap bikes, but I think the quality of the KTM far outshines other brands.

Ya cant go wrong with a KTM! I havent ridden the new ones yet but i did have an 01 250sx and i didnt have many problems with it and i rode it and raced it constantly for a year.
The only problem i did have was a left hand rear wheel bearing collapsed on me and ruined the hub, which was my fault because i had the chain too tight and still rode it with a worn bearing.

I get to ride the 2011's on the 1st of August but unfortunately the 250 sx wont be in Aus in time for the 2011 launch :(

Go the KTM youll love it ;D

I've only had the chance to ride one KTM smoker and it was a 300. Wasn't doing any moto or anything but man can those things take a pounding. We submerged by buddies 300. Shook it out and kept on riding. At a 60 to 1 mix and they say no top end rebuilds. Gotta be something good about the bikes.

In the last year I've had a KX 250 yr 2000 a YZ 250 yr 2004 and a KTM 250 yr 2004 and I found the KTM was great but it was more like a 4 stroke in that is sacrifices top end clout to gain a little bit more torque at the bottom end (compared to the YZ and KX) so I sold mine and now I stick with the KX and YZ.. All are great bikes - way better than 4 strokes but from my selection of bikes the KTM just didnt make it as good as the others, from what I've seen anyway generally I feel all new 2 strokes are being built to emulate crappy 4 stroke power curves to try to entise buyers back from the 4 strokes and I think thats a crappy move, 2 strokes rule always!!¬!!  :P

Part of the reason of getting the 2010 is a better deal price wise compared to the 2011. Im also looking into the  2010 YZ250 which more or less priced the same as the KTM. Thanks for the feed back, keep it coming!!!!!

Why not just get a good used one? Why spend a whole bunch of money on a brand new one, when you could get a good used 2-Stroke for about $2000. Heck, my dream bike would be a new KTM 150, but I can get close to the same kind of fun on my CR250 for a whole lot less. After I ride myself into shape and save a little bit then I'll get a 150. By then, I can probably find a good used one. Two strokes are so easy to update to good running condition, that an updated used one is just as good as a brand new one.

hey new here! All I know is I was once a dedicated jap zook buyer, I just bought my ktm 150 last week and omg i have never had sooooo much fun on a bike. I noticed there was a 144 vs 250f thread just from my experience so far i went riding last weekend at a sand track with my buddies one with a ktm 250f and a yz 250f and practiced some starts and they couldnt beat me to the first turn. I'll admit I'm obsessed with my new katoom lol. And from what I hear the 250sx makes the most hp at 51 and you gotta love how you can interchange the powerband hit with different color springs

We could start a whole new thread as to why i don't want a "good used one'' I'm just after feedback on the '10 ktm 250sx before spending my hard earned as i've never owned a ktm before.

I've got one of those good used ones and sure it has a high degree of fun factor but if I could get a new bike I would... as long as it was a 2 stroke  :D

I race an '09, overall head and shoulders above my '06 YZ.
Jetting on mine was, and still is finekey, very sensitive.
3 different types of bolts shit me, hex, allen key and torx key or a combination of both, f@#k's me why.
Only mods I have done are getting suspension done and a Hardparts pipe and silencer.
50hrs and just fitted first set of rings, approx $100 in parts :D
I will buy another one....maybe with a 300 kit fitted.
