Life keeps getting busier...
I purchased a 01 KTM 380 EXC, rejetted it based on the setting I used in the 00 300 EXC. The 300 was past down to my son. (yea he's one happy guy)
My daughter has gotten married and we now have a 23 month old granddaughter. Yes I'm planning on a little pink 50 for her when she's ready.
I helped my son-in-law (SIL) purchased his 1st motorcycle, a Honda 1975 CB 550. Since he's only ridden a bike (Honda 70) once when he was 10, I had to teach him how to ride it... Once I thought he was ready, I turned him loose. I than introduced him to the world of dirt bikes. I borrowed my buddies KX 125 for him. My SIL did great, even finishing the day riding the 300...
Last winter I picked up a buddy bike... A 1991 KDX 200 for a whopping $150.00 Yes it was a complete basket case. The bottom end was fine, so I had to replace the power valves, top end, some of the plastic, grips, exhaust and completely reassemble the bike. It was a fun project. The bike has been ridden by a lot of my son's friends. This has introduced dirt bikes to more of his friends. Several which now own a bike. My SIL rides the bike as much as he can... he loves the KDX
I've been busy helping friends and my son's friends refurbish their bikes. Being cheap , we like to keep our old trusty smokers running. One of my son's friends (on very tight budget) purchased a clapped out early 90's YZ125 for $300. We placed the crank, new top end, rebuilt the carb and replaces the wheel and suspension bearings. He painted the frame & plastic, cleaned and polished the engine and exhaust... It looked and ran great. After it was finished he send a picture to the gentleman he purchased it from, He was so impressed with the bike he offered him $300 more than he had invested... so he sold it and picked up and 01 KTM250 SX. It had some jetting and a few other issues we were working through. One of his buddies offered him $250 more than he had invested... Sold... He now picked up and 06 RM 125... it had some clutch issues... When he bought the bike it came with new clutch plates and springs. I showed him how to clean up the grooves on the clutch basket, replace the clutch disks and springs. It now runs like a scalded ape... He's keeping this one... Along the way he's learned (by watching and helping me) to replace a crank and crank bearings, rebuild the top end, and rebuild the clutch. How now knows how to troubleshoot carb jetting and replace wheel and suspension bearings. His out of pocket cash is 1/2 of what the RM is worth.
Another son's buddy picked up a 99 KTM 250 EXC. Other than replacing a few bolts and a lot cleaning, it's a solid bike. Although the fun one was getting the broken bolt holding on the kickstarter out. The kickstarter fell off when he was bringing the bike when he purchased it. Yes he was a little pissed... I've taught how to go over the bike, check bolts, and general maintenance. I also taught him that left hand drill bits and save a lot of aggravation when trying to extract broken bolts... We were able to get the broken kickstarter bolt out without damaging the threads. We replaced the kick starter and used locktight on the kickstarter bolt to ensure that he doesn't lose this one.
I also bought a quad... yea a 4x4 quad... It was all of $600... the front diff, drive axles and driveshaft were missing. I've sourced the missing parts and now I have a quad I use around the house and to clear the trails. (although I haven't started it in over a year...
yea it get a lot of use... I'm definitely not a quad kind of a guy... I prefer two wheels and two strokes...
