What's wrong with EFI?

What i would like to know about Sherco's EFI system is how exactly they plan to monitor the air/gas/exhaust values.

Nothing is wrong with jetting carbs. But don't get me wrong especially if you live in high elevation(3500-6000ft) like I do where the temps in the summer can be 40 degrees or mid winter with a high of -17(Celsius), or riding areas changing elevations by the thousands, that is what this bike was designed for. Coastal or low elevation and its overkill for everything other than boosting hp by maybe 1-2?

Simple, as factory states,  you don't have to jet efi.

I'd imagine that EFI would be a blessing for city riding.. And motocross with lots of tight turns with long straights where you need bottom end and top end. The same goes for enduro trails.

And i think that never having to actually mix oil into the gas is a good thing. Also, you could run the bike on lots of different fuels, possibly even have different mappings for each one depending on how complex the EFI system is, or how open it is to the user.

And the 2 minutes it takes to change a main or pilot jet is worth not only hte initial increase in purchase price, but the fact you no longer posses the ability to diagnose or repair it and the thousands it can cost to repair the **** if something does go wrong?

yea because the 4 stroke efi systems are so unreliable and don't have any hand held tuners or computer software to communicate to them.

I have had quite a few 2 stroke snowmobiles with efi and they were awesome and we never had any issues with them either. Did I mention they were battery-less.....so there goes the weight disadvantage. efi is not a new concept, it has been proven in many other applications to be reliable. its just the latest evolution in 2 stroke technology to stay ahead of emissions regulations.

Even chainsaws have EFI.

Correct me if i'm wrong, i'm not that familliar with EFI on motorcycles, but the only things that could break on a EFI system would be the injectors, some hoses and cables and the ECU. I don't see where you're getting these "****ing thousands" from Stu.

Bout 600 for the throttle body assembly, 400+ for the ECU, and lets not even talk about the $80 an hour a shop will charge to find out what the problem actually is. And its not uncommon for them to be wrong.

I spoke to a guy that spent 1 grand in labour and miscellaneous parts at a shop trying to find out why his KX450F wasn't getting fuel, turned out to be a whole new computer was needed, costing another $800. Theres hundreds of storys just like that. Know what I do when my bike stops getting fuel? Pull the carby apart and clean it. 2 hour job. Free.

As I have said previously: If the manufacturers are willing to offer a 10 year guarentee on their electronics that are not fair wear and tear parts, I will happily run out and buy a new EFI bike. But they won't. I have no objections to EFI whatsoever other than what happens when it stops running?

efi/di/whatever has been pretty reliable and the tuning features are nice for sure....a couple years from now people will be pissing and moaning about how expensive the 2 strokes have become and boy " would I like simple, cheaper" 2 stroke... "remember those days"?? Progress comes with a price...I thought I was going to riding my Ossa enduro by now  ???
