Finally finished!!!! 2009 ktm 125sx resurrection
« on: August 01, 2013, 02:11:00 AM »
went from this pile

to this

finally finished my dream bike!!

in the almost 9 months that it has taken me to finish this bike (lack of funds/getting degree/life hapenning) it is finally done
also which i'm proud to say is that i have my degree in business management through Texas A&M
although i would have liked to get this bike done sooner, i'm glad i didnt because getting my degree would've been even harder if i had a running bike to distract me

here is everything that i had to replace/fix on this bike because it was such a huge pile of crap when i got it

Build List

Engine

completely new internals
top end/bottom end/cyl/cylinder head/crank
clutch plates
blue moto hose set of bike hoses (rad/carb/etc)
completely new airbox assembly
cleaned up FMF pipe/silencer. Haven't decided whether i'm going to paint my pipe black/or just make it factory looking with wd40 and a green pad

Chassis

orange powdercoated frame
worked suspension with some goodies for my 180#'s
silver wheelset (2009's originally came with black)
complete front brake system off of a 2011 ktm 250sx. I would've used mine but the piston in the brake caliper was seized, and the only way to fix it would've been to drill a hole in the backside and push it out that way. took it to a professional machinist and that's what he said. decided to pick the whole new system off ebay for 125 bucks

whole new plastic kit
cycra powerflow shrowds/rear fender
2013 front fender/#plate
new style non wrap around fork guards
fork skins to help prolong fork seal life
PDS protector (neoprene protector like fork skins)
cycra plastic skid plate
new ktm frame guards
TAG rebound grips. i'll never run another bike without these. absolutely love them
James Stewart/Kevin Windham bend bars (tall/flat/with not much sweep to them) very similar to the McGrath Bend

misc

pretty much every nut/bolt/bearing has been replaced on this bike with the exception of a few little things

FUTURE

going to get a hand stitched seat like the TSM team bikes have
some sort of graphics from PG, not sure what i'm going to do yet

let me know what you think!!!

oh and i know some people want to know the final $ amount, although i cant get it to the penny its pretty close

about 4100$ which includes the initial purchase of the bike for 1500$
this is including some deals i got, with the suspension/engine, so it would've been closer to 4500 without it

i know that sounds like a lot for a 2009 ktm 125
but it is completely fresh, has suspension set up for me
everything on this bike is exactly how i want it

let me know what you think!

i can't wait to rip this thing!! now the fun begins!! BRAAAAAAAAAAAP

Awesome job twosmoke 8) Congrats on the degree too-though I can't say much for Texas A&M if you just finished a business degree and somehow still think dirt bikes are good business. :o  ;)

I'd rather a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy.

Thats real nice, the price you paid is pretty cheap really, its nearly a new bike and its set up the way you want it. Plus you got the enjoyment of turning a pile of crap into a race ready beast! Proof you can polish a turd.
Some fresh TSM graphics would be cool with chrome similar to the team bikes, not exact same but so its a one off.
Nice work twosmoke

And congrats on the degree ;D

hahahahahh good one ford

yea i can honestly say right now dirt bikes are horrible business unless you're fixing them

i still laugh at the local shops having new 2011's laying around for 1 grand off of list price, then again they are valve munchers

yea, not sure if you say the original thread i did, but the bike when i got it was just about as bad as a bike could be

broken crank, engine trash
suspension leaking everywhere
rusted bolts
just a complete lack of care

now that i think about it i should've talked the guy down to around 1,000 bc it was so trashed  :- :-
i'll have TSM on the bike but it wont be replica graphics

thanks! it was the hardest 4..errr 5 years of my life getting the degree. I can't remember a time where i went to bed before 1-2am

Congrates twosmoke, on both the bike and the degree...  There are two things no one can take from you, your education (degree), and the knowledge you gained rebuilding the bike from a pile of crap...  Both will pay dividends in the future.  I understand how hard it is to get your degree...  It took me almost 20 years to get my masters degree.  Life, kids, job(s), kept getting in the way...

Treat yourself to a weekend of nothing but riding...  but be warned, since you've been off the bike for a little while, you are going to be one tired, sore, but happy KTM 125 owner...  When you take it out for the shakedown ride, remember to re-tighten all bolts, as things tend to work loose...

Again congrates twosmoke, on both the bike and the degree.  Job well done.
