Newbie in need of mechanical advice
« on: May 20, 2013, 10:10:16 AM »
Hi guys,

I've had 30 odd hours use on my rm250 since buying it and because it was second hand I am unsure about the top end. (I am not riding competitively "YET") I thought it would be a good idea to think about getting a fresh top end just i know its all good. At the moment there is no signs of any trouble as it starts promptly and has POWER. The concerning bit is that when going through the service manual it states that i have to completely remove the exhaust valve, or is that when inspecting the cylinder? I don't want to have to go through with it if I don't have to because its a lot of work. Like i say I'm a rookie but i do have the knowledge to change a piston and what-not. I will be relieved if i only have to undo the exhaust valve cover and nut!

Any info would be greatly appreciated,

Jared.

You don't need to remove the exhaust valve. Definitely inspect it while you have the barrel off, and only remove if it is heavily carboned and needs cleaning. It is quite easy, and not something to stress about.

The power valve is nothing like the ticking time bomb sitting on top of a 4 stroke engine...
