I think evo's point still holds because all of those texts were published long before "idiocracy" took hold. Great movie

Thanks for that Jeram. I saw that movie a couple of years ago and have been trying to remember the name of it lately.
Fair bit of truth in the movie as the 'stupid' have more children then the ''average', who are too busy having a career.
At least I will be dust by then.

Back to the "sub" - subject, good bike rags:

http://www.motoretroillustrated.com/

But I am biased -- all of it is pointed right at me. Vintage City (me and the content). But, nice writing and digging by the authors, amazing photos and some great little known stories here and there.

Suffers from a common malady.

Not enough advertisers.  Having trouble putting out issues.

Print is on life support these days.

Ok, back to your regularly scheduled arguments folks!

I dont see what the problem is with this article. Jody was modifying the yz to be the best for him and listed the products he used. Yeah it might be product placement but it wasnt reviewing a stock bike, it was modifying a bike and that takes aftermarket parts.

On the actual bike though, other than the suspension it seemed he was trying to make it as good as a stock KTM  :P

The article was worse than any late night infomercial, it is a complete stinker. It was blatantly obvious product placements. Weisel has has forgot the basics of journalism and soul his soul, lost what little credabilty he had and has become just another PR spruiker for whoever gives him free products in return for favourable publicity.

Mitch Bohem is doing a great job with Moto Retro Illustrated

Who WOULDN'T sell their journalism soul for free parts? As for obvious product placement, I read no such thing. All I read was his opinions of the products he used. Then again it could have been the result of a couple hundred from each manufacturer. No realistic way of knowing.

Funny how this thread has turned into a bashing about product placement, but the same thread on the ultimate KTM hasn't. ???
Come on boy's this is not vital.

And btw, I wouldn't buy either. ;D

I forget the exact figures but, on average, about 75% of a magazine's revenues are derived from advertisers. Weisel's gotta eat.

The problem with product placement (if that's what this is) in articles like this and the KTM one, is that it removes the objectiveness of the writer. If pro circuit pays MXA to do something like this, then you as the reader are just getting told what Pro circuit wants you to hear, not what the writer actually thinks of the product.
To do an objective "ultimate" build, they should have compared products from a number of different sources and tried different combinations....to come up with the best bike.

Spot on Evo, that is the difference !! Would definitely be an interesting read if done that way.

Wow,I can't believe how frucked up this has become. :o It's one man's take on what he likes in a bike using products of his choosing-regardless of what some may think the real or imagined motivations, these are all products/services commonly used by 2t owners all over.
A Pro Circuit agenda?Seriously?Their products and abilities are well known,as are those of bones bacon's suspension work.
Steahly fww,Vforce reeds, everything but the brake scoop thing is a good-and common choice.I run an FMF combo but the fact he didn't choose what I use doesn't mean he's being paid to use it.For what he's using it for,it's likely the best choice.
I've read hundreds of "build" articles like this over the years in all mags and this is the first time I've run across these bizarre responses.
Why would he be testing a bunch of different things? That's just dumb. It's not a pipe, reed,or fww shootout after all.
Take it for what it is,a 2t build in a bike mag using commonly used products-nothing more.

I do,based solely on the fact KTM has been developing the 2t engine all these years. ;D
