Heard rumours of a 500exc two stroke!!!!
« on: February 26, 2013, 03:26:07 AM »
I was chatting to the toowoomba KTM and Kawasaki dealership today about picking up a '14 250SX. Guy was awesome and very very two stroke. When I asked him how many four strokes he sold he laughed and said: Only as many people walk through my doors and won't listen to logic. Gave me a good giggle.

Anyways he also mentioned that a magazine had rumours of a 500 exc two stroke from KTM. Has anyone else heard of this?

Maybe. I'm hoping that the 14 250sx will have DFI or EFI. But at the same time I'm not because the first year or two of four stroke lines that got 'upgraded' to efi had issues. Not reliablity issues but issues in terms of powerbands and power in general. They seem to have gotten themselves together now though.

HAH! nothing like a bit of old school. Cita, you're right into the dual sport deal, would you buy it if it came out? the 500 exc two stroke I mean. It obviously wouldn't even be on the same planet in terms of powerband as the 500cc motocrosser. I'd wager that would swing for 100% bottom end power in a tractable fashion.

You would only buy one as a novelty...an expensive novelty, you couldn't expect to be race competitive on one...except for maybe the Finke  :o
By the way, what's wrong with a 2013 ktm 250?

I was being facetious, every year since about 05-06 the K-T-M is injected story does the rounds. They will have carburetors for the forseeable future

I think you're right. Still a little finger crossing can't hurt.

Only if it wasn't done right. It the ridiculous power of a 500 was put in the right places in the right way, who wouldn't take it over a 500F? So much cheaper it would be laughable. AS for whats wrong with a 13 250SX I don't have the money right now. Thats why I'm saving it up for a 14. But if theres no significant changes I'll just pick up a second hand 13.

The rumor that makes the most sense to me (that has been posted here before) is that KTM has the DI design ready to rock and roll -- when they are forced to bring it out due to updated Euro pollution regulations.

Now if they DID trot out such a beast, and did the dance in the US of A to make it streetable, would I buy one? I would think so. But I am a strange bird over here in the states. Yamaha in the mid '80s had a tough time selling very many RZ350s. As amazing as that bike was (IMHO anyway) it had a small target market, i.e. the folks that did not have a negative impression of the noise/smell/unreliability of two stroke bikes.

Oh, and in case any of those anti-2T folks are reading this -- I owned one of those RZ's, and put 40,000 miles on it on the stock bore(s). A grin on my face the whole time. And never had to adjust a single valve in that time.

All this to say I agree with TMKIWI.

Unfortunately.

But of course a glimmer of hope to be surprised does live within me still.  ;-)

I don't think its just KTM that has their design tested and working well, I Think its every motorcycle manufacturer out there. Even Honda. They've got the four stroke market wrapped around their finger, so from a business perspective, why would you try to demolish that with a product that didn't make as much money? My point here is that they're going to bleed the four stroke market dry, then when their business is set to collapse cos all the dealerships have stopped selling four strokes, they will bring out their DFI two strokes and be right as rain.

KTM have a 300 that already does that, why build a 500 to go slow on, you ride 500 2t's, so you come in looking like this :o :o ( my mate and I call that look the Shit fuck's" )
