1998 YZ 250 Reed advice wanted
« on: April 23, 2010, 06:51:25 PM »
I have never replaced my reeds and I'm guessing that I should?  Should I replace with Boyseen  reeds and rad valve or V-Force?

While you should probably look at the reeds and make sure they are not fatigued and replacing them if they are, answering the second part of your question is difficult without more information.

Stuff like;

What kind of riding do you do?

Do you race?

How often do you ride?

When's the last time you freshened up the top end?

You know stuff like that...

I ride outdoor style tracks like Hang Town about twice a month.  My motor has around ten hours on the top and bottom end.  I do not do any racing but, can hang with the vet intermediate guys.  I weigh 210 pounds so a little extra power on the bottom would be great if anyone has suggestions for that as well!

You will feel the most difference by replacing the whole reed cage instead of just the reeds...The Boyesen rad valve is more of a low to mid range and the v force is more mid and top from my experience with both of them but that was on Hondas but i dont see it being that much different on different brands,i always used the v force on all my bikes but have tested both.....hope this helps

I have the same bike - '98 YZ250, and had the opposite experience from the last post.  The V-Force3 seemed to give me the best low-mid boost, and the Rad Valve was more top-end.  I tried the FMF power reeds, and they didn't seem to make much difference over stock.  I like the V-Force3 the best.

Personally I like the rad valve it's a complete unit with replaceable individual components. I have a '98 CR 250. A buddy with a '97 has the V-Force and I feel sorry for him when he is forced to buy 4 petals at a much higher cost than the 2 petal set up on the rad valve. V-Force frame..plastic  Rad Valve frame..aluminium. V-Force..euro made Rad-valve..AMERICAN MADE it all boils down to personal preference, there is only a certian amount of volume in the crank case, more petals don't let in more air.
The quickist way to get a better pull on the bottom is to go up one tooth on the rear sprocket.

I say what ever floats your boat use it. If you want a faster bike, A) Send it to some one who knows what their doing, or B) Ride harder! Other than that your not going to get factory secrets to get more horsepower.  :P

Or talk to 2T Institute!!

The first thing that he explained to me is that the more you learn, the more you find out that there is to learn. I feel like I got a college education in two-strokes while talking to him!

Also if you want to learn about what the factories do (or anyone else that wants to go fast) listen to the podcast on Racer X about testing with Doug Dubach and David Pingree (by the way both those guys are pro two-stroke!)

Called the "Art of Factory Testing Part 1" worthwhile listen...

Sorry no can find linky thingy!

I like the boyesen pro series.I've never seen the need to go with the full intake set up.Better power than stock with these reeds and once rejetted, better mileage as well.No biggie if you're an MXer but quite a difference if you're a woods rider.
I'd rather a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy.

can't really comment too much on the v force or radvalve, the way i looked at it, i looked at the v force and rad valve and thought well they don't look all that much different than a stock assembly but with better petals, so the tight arse that i am bought the boyeson pro series dual stage reeds for about 1/4 of the price ofa v force!! ,and am very happy with the difference!!
