Frame swap
« on: January 07, 2013, 05:20:41 AM »
Ok all you experts. Can any one tell me if the frames on 1984/85 RM 125's & 250's are the same.
I have looked at part numbers on the net and they are different numbers. But are they different frames ?.
My 125 frame has extra engine mount holes that are not used and I am hopeing they are utilised for different engines.

I have a 250 lined up but the frame is a bit buggered and I have a spare rebuilt 125 frame I am hopeing to use and swap in the 250 engine and radiators.
I cant get hold of the 250 engine ( 400km's away ) until I buy it.

Any ideas.?

Check the wheelbases. Typically 125s and 250s used the same swingarms but the 125s had shorter wheelbases - the 125 engine and frame were usually shorter.

Just checked on suzukiorg.com and the 125 has a 20mm shorter wheelbase.
Wonder if motor would still fit ?

You would probably have to lengthen the frame and it would just be too much work. I would try to save the original frame. I wonder if that extra motor mount is for a PE 175 motor?

No idea. It is there for a reason. Some other motor must fit.

I am now the proud owner of a basket case 1984 RM 250. ;D
Got it for a couple of hundred.
It has a '85 disc front end the same as my 125.
Will replace all the plastics and the motor needs a rebuild and a new stator.
The guy I got it off is currantly trying to get a Fox podium shock modified to fit his RM and if all goes well I will order 2 for my bikes. (His friend is the importer). Alot cheaper then having to pay for an Ohlins.
I will see what the frame is like when I get the bike in a few weeks and either rebuild that frame or if the 250 engine will fit, put it into my rebuilt 125 frame.
Will start a thread when I get the bike.
Meanwhile I have some stuff to order from the States.

The 84 is a absolute weapon, a cheap bolt on mod wast to use the 82 head(can machine the 84 head anyway) That really gets them going.
Before you buy any shocks talk to Nitron in the UK.

I know the '82 made 50+hp.  In '83 they dropped compression, tried to "de-tune" her.
