What replacement clutch for my 2003 RM250?
« on: December 03, 2012, 08:45:45 PM »
Hi just wondering what guys have found to be best? I always ran OEM on the Honda but found the RM genuine is nearly twice as much as other makes.

How have people got on with EBC etc

Also is there any difference from the '03 to final year made '08 as I own both

Thanks

I can't speak for the difference, but the RMs are notorious for shredding clutch baskets. I would be looking at a hinson clutch basket and maybe a full clutch kit. But a hinson basket at the least. You could even go all out and put in a magura Hydraulic clutch. THAT would be awesome.

Your 03 has the same plates as the 08.

Yeh Im quickly being told that they destroy the baskets. This ones now done just a touch over 19hrs so when I take it out will check. I run Hinson on my CRF - best bit of kit Ive had but I wouldnt touch a Magura again. Amazing and light (not that you need that on the RM) but requires too much maintenance when Im racing week in week out and my starts when backwards when fitted...maybe Im old school and prefer cable but either ways I couldnt get on with it and had a few mates I race with found the same mid season

I have owned nothing but RM 250's for over 20 years (92, 96, 00, 02, 04, 06 and 08) and found that one of the best RM clutch fixes is to install an aftermarket clutch perch.  The motion pro assembly works great and really improves the overall feel of the engagement and dramatically extends the useable life of the plates.  I have the motion pro units installed on both my 08's and I am definitely a clutch abuser and ride mostly MX.....  You may want to give that a try before you invest some significant money in a Hinson system.

I'm not calling you a liar, but I don't understand how a clutch perch improves the life of the actual clutch.

well, after 37 continuous years of racing MX it is what I have experienced.  The motion pro allows for much more adjustment in the cable and probably allows for a more solid engagement; which prevents slipping, excess heat and wear, and improves clutch life.  Note, I also run quality plates and heavy springs (Barnett or EBC).

Thats interesting. Perhaps the clutch life of RMs is simply due to a dodgey perch from the factory? If it was constantly dragging slightly because of dodgey adjustment, that makes a perfect wad of sense to me. I'll remember this if I ever own an RM.

The plates begin to swell when they get hot. Usually from cheap plates. Tusk and other cheap brands are notorious for that. I run EBC and love them. I tried a cheaper brand once in a pinch, after the first moto, the boy was fuming. And he very rarely even uses the clutch. So we made it through that day and that night an order was put in for EBCs.

As for baskets, I try to find deals on the Moose. Very strong units and much cheaper than Barnett or Hinson. Check ebay, there's usually a few Moose on there.

I have to agree with RM250guy, I replaced the Perch & lever with a Sunline and a new Motion Pro Terminator cable. World of difference from the stock with a MP cable

If you want cheap & fast, it won't be good.
