Is stroke an issue on 144 kits?
« on: November 04, 2012, 01:31:41 AM »
i have a 2008 ktm 125. the bike is super fast, but i have been thinking about boring out the cylinder for a 144 kit. i just didint know if i would be wasting my time without adding the 4mm to the stroke. any help or info would be awsome

Depends on what you are trying to gain.

Changing to a 144 will make the bike a lot stronger and in theory give you more usable bottom end. I believe you have to stroke it to get to 144 (though not sure anymore - used to be 139 were cyl mods while 144 was cyl and crank).

Another option is to use the KDX 200 cylinder and piston. This is supposed to take it out to 175 and from what I have been told, makes it a really good woods weapon.

My knowledge of these things is about 15 years old but back then, my 139 yamaha would out pull a KTM 200 in just about every situation.

Dont you mean KTM 200 cylinder because thats a straight bolt on for the old 125s and if my old 08 exc 200 is anything to go by makes an amazing all round do anything bike, torquey down low and went like a rocket in the higher rev's.

the ktm 125, 144 and 200 all have different stroke lengths.
the recent ktm 125's can't be bored to 144 due to thickness of cylinder walls.
the ktm 150 is actually a 144cc .  they redesignated it the 150 for internal reasons. it has different bore and stroke. that's why they dominate any other 144 for power and torque...
they all share the same bottom ends, but different stroke lengths.
