Have you ever rode the later rm`s? My 07 used to out drag my mates 06 yz and we both thought the rm handled better through the twisties. Its just a shame you can't get new ones anymore.

That was also my experience. I rode my buddies 06 quite a bit and it was no contest. When he did the 144 and all I had  was a SST pipe, he couldn't pull away from me. I think the YZ would make a better beginners bike, or woods conversion 125 by a lot, but as a motocross bike, I found the RM to pull harder, hit harder, and handle much better.

Picking up this '09 YZ125 tomorrow for $2400.  Bone stock, barely ridden.  I thought it was a good deal.
