If I had the money for an 05 yz250 I would look for an 06 because of the SSS suspension upgrade. The yz hands down for handling, but the ktm has the superior motor. Ride both and go from there.

MXA did tests for all those years and if memory serves me right the yz got the nod every year. It wasn't until 2011 that the ktm beat the yz overall

How much money I will be using on parts? As much as I need to :) plus some I don't need :)
So its just the suspension I got that could use an update? I'm pretty much satisfied with my motor after I installed a v-force 3 and a pc long silencer  but..the ktms looks so cool

The cost really isn't that much different. You'll spend money on both bikes to get them bring them up to date. The KTM will need suspension work, the yz will need motor work(Head mod, Porting, reeds, etc.).

I'd go with the 2010 KTM-250sx & send your suspension to 'Factory Connection' for stiffer springs & a revalve. It should run you about $850.00 usd & that's a decent price for top of the line suspension work... ;)...It may even be a little cheaper than $850.00 but if you race it's well worth the price!  :)

Id go with the KTM. If you're willing to spend as much as you need to on parts, you should consider getting some ohlins suspension for the KTM. Forks and shocks would be great or just forks. But you could stick with your stock suspension just fine but sending it away would be a must. KTM has a weapon of a motor and brakes that would bring the incredible hulk to a screaming halt. Only down side is its suspension isn't exactly super. But send it away or replace it and you've got yourself an unstopable race weapon.

Whats so great about the Katooms engine though? http://motocrossactionmag.com/Main/News/8119606a-d7ef-4c86-b382-e6d7dddee8f5.aspx

thats less than one horsepower less than the 2012 250SX I believe but I could be wrong. And thats bone stock. I'm not sure which class you're racing in but either way power is a must and the KTM delivers bone stock. With some suspension work and/or replaced suspension, you're good to go. However as any rider will agree, a bike isn't the deciding factor in who takes the chequered flag, If you love your YZ and can just mesh and work with it at every point, hang onto it. I'd ride the bike first before making your decision.

This^^.I'd get the SSS suspended YZ.The KTM has a little more power but the YZ is better suspended.Only pros can really use all the power any of the 250 2t's produce anyway so the extra horsey or two is only good for benchracers.

I'd rather a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy.

Allright.. But what about the ktms ergometics ? Im 6"1 tall ..how well will that suit a ktm? I'm leaning towards a 09-10 ktm if I get a good deal.but  will you get the suspension on par with the sss or close with a good revalve or? Tnx for all input btw :) I won't be sending them to factory connection since I live in Norway. but we have some good suspension gurus here :)

The KTM has more room and a flatter layout with adjustable clamp positioning... The YZ is kind of old and has you sitting in as opposed to on... (my opinion)
