Just to point out a few things to keep in mind.

1. The YZ has to be stroked to get 144. Bolt on is 139.

No it doesn't.

Just to point out a few things to keep in mind.

1. The YZ has to be stroked to get 144. Bolt on is 139.

2. All KTM parts are priced significantly higher than the YZ, even after you modify it.

3. The KTM has no suspension woes. You just have to know how to tune WP and PDS and it is different.

4. The YZ has a better clutch but the KTM has hydralic. You'll abuse them both. Easy pull or longer lasting.

5. KTM levers suck (thanks to the hydralics).

6. You will spend the difference on cost (of a new bike) preparing the YZ but replacement parts will not be as bad.

Finally, neither bike will make you fast. At most riders level, the bike is a very small percentage of the equation. It is all up to you. Choose your favorite color and move on.

1) No it doesn't. The cases have to be ground for clearance but no stroking required.

2) KTM parts are quite comparable, maybe OEM parts are more expensive but so are Suzuki. Aftermarket everything is pretty much the same.

3) Agree there. There are some good suspension guys around that know KTM suspension, get onto them.

The rest of your points i agree with or don't know any different

OK, I admit to being dated. The Rick Petersen Motorsport 144, the most popular kit at the time, was stroked and as far as I could find (back then), all 144's were stroked. That is why I preferred the 139.

I stand corrected.

The problem with KTM parts is that most of the parts ARE aftermarket and those parts are more expensive (i.e. pistons, rods, bearings, plastic...everything I have had to buy for my KTM (admittedly very little) has cost half again as much as what I pay for product from Japan.

I'm not trying to talk him out of the KTM, but these are things you should know going in. The guy I got mine from wasn't prepared for it and now rides a 250 4$.  :o

PDS got a real bad rap from riders and tuners. KTM was adament that it was better but they just couldn't convice the public. When they grudgingly went back to linkage, they only admitted failure in marketing, not product. I like it. I am still trying to get my arms around it, but I think I have much more issues right now with the front end than in the rear.

I don't think I`v ever noticed a difference in the parts prices on my ktm compared to the suzuki`s an hondas I`v had before, and all the medias down talking of the PDS setup is definitely an over reaction, it works great and can change drastically with just a few clicks so its never too hard or too soft.

Stu, that is CRAZY! The whole Crank Assy (rod, etc) is less that $400 US...retail, genuine OEM. And no one pays suggested retail. Service Honda sells it for less than $300 US. Cheap Cycle Parts (one of the more expensive sites) has the assy at $442.

You need a different local shop.

No shit. Forgive my language mods but no shit. It would be about that. Australia is just head bashingly overpriced on everything. An ordinary NGK spark plug cost me 18 bucks a few weeks ago. $700 might be a bit over the top. $600 bare minimum I kid you not. Australia is bad enough.. but a hole like the town I live in doubles how bad its gonna be. Hence why I buy my stuff from the states :P A genuine yamaha fuel tank was gonna cost $590 for my YZ too. That was when I put my knee through it.
