Rode a 2012 KX250F
« on: February 26, 2012, 09:38:58 PM »
A friend just bought one and we went out yesterday.  He only had about an hour and a half on the bike so I wanted to take it easy.  All my comparsions are coming from a 250 two stroke, which I've ridden for 10 years now and currently have a 2011 250SX.

I continually stalled it while taking off.  It sounds like it's idling at like 4000 rpm, but it apparently has no balls at that rpm.  You can't just let the clutch out and have it chug forward, you gotta finesse it with more throttle.  These F bike still shift like poo.  I shift with a light foot and continually got caught in neutral from 1-2.  Had to teach myself to bang it harder like a harley.

This is the first F bike I've ridden where I really felt like it was hard to turn.  I didn't get into the power too much, but it supposedly makes 39 RWHP which makes it "feel like a 2 stroke."  Yeah, no.  It doesn't feel like a two stroke and it still has 10 less HP than my KTM.

It is a "nice" bike I guess, but I can honestly still say from the bottom of my heart that 250F's do absolutely nothing for me.  If I had to ride one, I would probably stop riding - for real.  At least a 450F would be faster - so I could see myself on one of those in some desperate times or something, but this is supposed to be the best 250F ever made and I can't say I had any jealous feelings.  And I really can't wait for this thumper trend to be over with already because after 14 years of their bullsh*t, I'm still not any closer to buying one.

I rode my buddies 450 a few years ago. I expected to be blown away by it, but it felt like I was riding a tractor.

I know the feeling. I had an RMZ250 and my current 2000 CR 250. It was so disappointing when I hopped on the RMZ. Then I sold it!!!

Hahaha, I can't wait to prove that to friend of mine selling their 125 for a 250f... Such a waste of a good two stroke that probably makes more power...

I've ridden a 400F, 426F and cr 450F and in every case I admit, I was impressed with the power.  Each of those bikes ran like a supercharged 250 smoker - in that there was no lag at all, you wick it at any time and it'll stand straight up.  IMO, they had too much power for me.  I like to ring my bikes out to 100% and the 250 smoker I can use almost all of the power and it keeps me satisfied.  The 400+ F bikes I felt like I was having to hold back or else I would get hurt.  At least those bikes were faster which was kind fun.  I still never liked the insane low end or the extra weight, but like I said....the 250F literally does nothing to impress me.

I would consider buying a 450F at some point - but I still can't come to terms with the extra weight.  5 more HP isn't worth 30 more lbs. Then again, as long as someone keeps making a 250 smoker, I would probably buy any brand :)

Hey Micah, Any word on what you thought about the seperate function fork. I still think it is a bogus idea to save money, but it seems a few other manufacturers are playing around with it, and it is being developed more. I have yet to ride the new Kawi 250F, so wanted to hear so real world feedback on what it is like.

idk if its more to save money or weight, the pro mechanics say its quite a bit lighter than the current forks being used, if it works the same/a little better and is lighter i think its a good move, but i bet they won't put it on the 2 stroke lol

imagine a 175 pound 125?  :o

This design is nothing new really.. Cagiva/Marzocchi had this in the mid-late 80's. I experimented with a '11 KX250f... very fast and I liked the way it handled. I thought the SFF fork was awesome and like the concept a lot. The '12 is similar in most aspects... was almost electric to me and therefore kind of boring... but very fast. Seem less from bottom to top and I could see the allure of these bikes. I was always worried about the TPS getting broke and  I had issues with starting. Not my cup of tea and it was sent on down the river... it ultimately made me commit to 2t's until the end of my riding days.

I couldn't even tell that the forks were not a conventional inverted set up.  I guess for a racer it would be nice to only deal with one clicker.  I had no complaints in the suspension, braking or ergo department. I will say the plastic looks exceptionally cheap.  The shrouds are very ill fitting around the gas cap area which would piss me off if I dropped $6900 on it.  I'm also not impressed with the black spray-bombed casted components.  Then again, I may be getting spoiled with the nice cnc'd/anodized finishes on my KTM :)

I was suprised that the perches and pegs are not adjustable like the KX450F.  And also the perches are for 7/8 bars still.

Also, with all the electronic do-dads on this bike, I've read that on a cold motor, the first kick simply energizes the components.  I take that to mean that you can never start this bike cold on the first kick.  The second kick is supposed to start the bike.  When it was warm I was able to refire it with one kick though.  Also, you have to hold the throttle wide open to start it cold.  My buddy kicked the thing about 50 times, both with no throttle and holding the throttle at varying degrees.  Finally when worn completely out, he held it WOT and it started burping and started soon after.  Kind of annoying.

I may have said it before but..  I let others ride my 2 stroke bikes..
borrowing theire 4 strokes .

I was expecting more power and torque than what they had to offer.

the worst inst the 4 strokes but the 4 stroke owners trying to convince me that
you need a 4 stroke..

i asked charlie costanzo about the SFF fork. He was Dan Reardon's mechanic when he won the aussie titltes and he said that once you get them set up well they are better than normal forks but they take extra work to get them to that point. there is a lot more changes that can be made compared to normal forks

as far as the 250f's. yes they have an electric, boring kind of powerband but they also dont wheelstand or break traction as easily as a 250 2T. each has their advantages and disadvantages but just because they dont feel fast doesn't mean they are slow.

but 2 strokes just make riding more fun

until they're as light, easy and cheap to fix, i don't care how "technologically advanced" they are, I'll never own one.
