I think they blow up because of the misconception that they must be tuned to the extreme ragged edge to be competitive with 450s.
A modified smoker that is both fast and reliable would be on par hp wise with a ktm 350f and they have proven competitive, Mike Alessi won a national on one last year.

Agreed, consistency wins races. Blowing up does not. I keep Jeremy's bikes reliable and able to finish races.

I always see videos of him riding his 250f and 450f.  I wonder why he is choosing to ride the smoker.

Another misconception is that oil in the gas is bad and that you should try a ratio of 100:1 or maybe even 150:1 if it's hot out and the track is sugar sand.... oh and lean out the jetting too....

Dry as a bone, and bored with a hone.

I think 4 stroke dirtbikes are a phase, kind of like "Glam Rock" in a way. You see the whole world subscribing to it, and you wonder how everyone could be choking down so much Kool Aid and Spam... Then 10 Years later, nothing's left but the timeless stuff from before and after..

I was at the Steel City race last year and Steve Roman smoked the second half of the 450 qualifying on his YZ 250
