Ok then I am picking a bike up tomorrow. It is the cr250, 2001. How do I know if the year is correct. I heard that I need to check the vin number the 10th digit is the year, so what number am I looking?

I have the 124 version, and there is the year on the bike, by the vin number, although, sometimes that number is worn.

Contrary to what some say,250 2t's are a beast-but fun.Even a 125 I've never looked at as a beginners bike.All my 125's were harder to ride effectively than my 250,and that's harder to ride than my last 4t was and all can bite you when you're not paying attention.Regardless,fun,fun,fun

There should be a plate next to the VIN number that is imprinted with the Year. At least I remember it that way!! I know that the 2006 has the year imprinted!

If I did'nt already own a KTM 300xc and was in your position right now I would without a doubt go with the Suzuki RM-250! Other than owning just one Maico & my current 08 KTM 300xc aw' yeah and a Honda mini trail 50 when I was 7 yrs. old I have always owned Suzuki RM's & everyone that I've owned has been GREAT & VERY FAST bikes! You can't go wrong with the RM! "Trust me on this!!!"

With that year RM you need to change 3rd gear about as often as you clean your air filter.  I think that got sorted out around 2004.

Early Honda 450F handles horribly and stalls easily.

I don't remember what the 2001 Honda CR250 power is like.  02-04 CR250 Aren't a beginner bike.  Irregardless of what MXA says the 05-07 have fantastic power although some come from the factory with the power valve cable adjusted wrong.  Not really a beginner power band though.  I'd research the YZ250, a reliable brand and I know the later models had a smooth mellow power delivery better suited for novice riders.
