What should i buy 2 stroke or 4 stroke.
« on: January 27, 2010, 11:54:59 AM »
Hi there guys i was thinking of buying a new motocross bike but don't know what to buy. I am 28, 6,5 and weigh 247lb's (don't laugh) ;D ;D.

I was either going to buy a RM 250 2002, which has had a lot of extra's and is going cheap, or a CR 250 2001 which has been well maintained and the 2000, and 2001 are the best years for CR, or last but not least a CRF 450 which i am still looking for to get for the right price. In your opinion what is best suited to my requirements? would the suspension take my weight?

I know that the 4 strokes are dearer to buy and cost more to maintain then the 2 stroke but would it be worth it in the long run.

All your  opinions would be very much appreciated as i am fairly new to motor cross.

Thanks. Martin

Well, the 450F is not a bad bike. The 250F's are what most of us talk about when talking about cost etc.  That being said, any of those 2 strokes would be a good bike, as long as taken care of.  If going with the 450F, I recommend getting an 04 or newer, and preferably a 05 or newer.  I've ridden the 03's and they are the biggest tanks and you will not like it if you ever ride a newer version, and then compare you will see.  Now, finally just be aware, the 4 stroke vs 2 stroke comes in to play here. Why, you may ask. See you are looking at older versions due to cost I take it? the 4 stroke will probably be a better bike for you if you are a beginner, plus considering your weight and height.  But let's say this bike has 60 hours on it. Well, if you ride it and it goes, you have a $1500 pile of metal there, most likely was around $3000 used running.  To rebuild a blown 4 stroke, unless you can do it yourself, you will spend quite a bit.  My friend builds them all day long and saves a ton of money.  But if you can't, just remember it could go both ways.  A low hour 450F is a good buy.  A 60+ hour 450F, unless it's been worked on, could be a regretful mistake. Just do some research. A 2 stroke on the other hand can be completely rebuild from the crank up for I'd say half of what the same work on a 450F would be, if not 3 times less. Plus, just add a flywheel weight on and a Gnarly pipe, and you have a great beginner bike.  It will most likely be a cheaper buy in as well.    JMHO so take it with an open mind

By the way, 2000 and 2001 CR's are not the best.  I have had 00,01,02,03,04,05,06 CR's.  The 05-07's are the best.  They only need a small mod done to the intakes (MiedosoRacing Pro intake mod), and no it isn't adding Vforce reeds etc. But after that is fixed, those years are by far the best.  They handle much better than the 00 and 01.  Feels skinnier and run good.

First off, what are you doing on a motocross bike, you should be playing basketball. I think that the cr 250r is a no brainer, because first off, it is so dang simple, any idiot(not calling you an idiot here) should be able to rebuild it themselves given the right tools and maybe a little advice from a friend, Plus, parts alone is at least 3x cheaper to rebuild. Now, if you were to get any four stroke, the 450 is the way to go, it hasn't had any major problems, where as the 250f has been known for valve problems, but the old 450's were ridiculously tank like and heavy. A 250 two stroke is a great option because one, it has a krap load of power, two it is a lot of fun and the power comes on like a light switch, and three with the new rules, you can race it in the 250f class, you would have an advantage, and four you would have the best bike to start out with. People say that a four stroke is better for beginners, I don't think so, four strokes bring bad habit's, but two strokes develop fast riders. So, I say go with the two stroke, it just makes sense.
I'd rather be riding...

Ya, but I do think we should be giving him the correct opinion, not just ours, the two stroke is your better option though, a 450 is a lot of bike, a 250 two stroke I think will give you a run for your money
I'd rather be riding...

Also, being a first post on a 2 stroke forum, I'm feeling baited. The weight and height etc. So I don't want this forum to become a joke. Hey, look they want a beginner on this or that bike, knowing this info etc.

Engine configuration aside,I'd go for the RM.They handle sooo much better than a CR-or the CRF for that matter but that's somewhat a personal taste. As for the fourstroke,I've had two and liked them both but I'd be more leary buying a used 4t unless I knew the bike.If the worst happens,it's big $$.
I'd rather a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy.

2 stroke my friend. Both bikes are great but the RM is more fun with the quick handling characteristics... UPS the engine to Bill's pipe! They built the best suzuki engines on this frigging Planet!!!

Had a 2002 RM 250, excellent bike.
Only had one problem with it, someone else decided they wanted it more than me >:( :'(
I think the two-stroke is the only way to go (especially if you like money in your wallet)

I say there's no reason to pansy about with a 250.  You need to get yourself something manly and big: 350cc and up!

In all seriousness, though, for a beginner (you are a beginner, right?) I think a 250 two-stroke is totally your best option.  A 450F will probably make you faster because they do a lot of the riding for you, but there's a very, very serious danger in that.  The better your first bike is, the worse of a rider you will become.  I guarantee it.  That's part of the reason my first three bikes had less than 4" of suspension in the rear.  I had to learn the instinct of riding safely and avoiding obstacles.  My instinct told me that if I rode beyond my abilities, I'd certainly be killed.  When you ride a bike that's a handful, you'll be well aware of this.  When one starts on a bike that does everything right, he soon learns that he can go anywhere he wants at any speed with reckless abandon.  Long-travel suspension will do this (no chance avoiding that, unless you want a pre-1975 bike) and four-stroke will do that.  If you start with a 4T, you never learn the art of dancing with the clutch and playing the gear shifter like Jimi Hendrix with his Stratocaster.  The bike just does it for you.  That's all fine and good for going fast as a beginner, but then you get up on stage, discover you're not Jimi Hendrix after all, and plow yourself neck-first into the face of a jump you thought you could make.

That's my condensed-version rant on bikes and safety.  Ultimately, if I were you I'd be looking for a '76 Maico AW250.

Is this Maico a 440 or only a 400?  Well in all the confusion, I forgot myself.
But considering this is a 1978 Magnum, the best-handling bike in the world, you have to ask yourself one question.
Do you feel lucky, punk?

i was kidding about the 4 stroke comment. since you're such a big guy i would get a bike that will fit you regardless of type. although to be honest you kinda fall outside most machine's design parameters. a guy i ride with is 6'4", 285# and when he's on anything but an open 2 stroke or his KTM 525 SX he looks like a regular sized adult on a minibike. also, any bike you buy will need significantly stiffer springs for the fork and shock. every big guy i have seen is always amazed when riding the bike for the first time with the right springs.

hey a 450 4t will be smooth and lull you in to going faster and faster but it will turn around and bite you when your least expecting it .If you can ride a 2t then you will be a true racer .
