2011 Gas Gas 300 Test
« on: May 16, 2011, 02:40:03 PM »
Here's a review of the 2011 Gas Gas 300, since a couple of recent threads involve the brand. I'd love to see a head-to-head test with this bike against the 2011 KTM 300. Both appear to be excellent machines. -->

I'm sure that either Dirt Rider or Dirt Bike magazine did a test in 2009 or 2010 of the GG-300ec as well as a KTM-300xc & a Husqvarna-300wr & the GasGas faired quite well! As I recall it was very reliable & as fast or faster than the KTM-300xc. As far as the Husqvarna it was the fastest bike in the test & said to be able to easily keep up with any off the floor 450 four stroke! IMO I think all of the said brands are excellent choices for anybody that's interested in a 300cc smoker!........... ;)

When they say keep up with a 450 are they talking endure models or mx models? I was reading Tue article in mxa about turning the husky wr 300 into an open class track bike and after a bit of engine work plus pipe from pro circuit it was putting out about 49 hp. I didn't think that would have made it competitive as that is not much more  uan a jap 250 mxer. Or is it the extra torque that does it?

Torque. A 300 has the same torque as a 450. Give or take.

The KTM 300XC's which is what I'm trying to get, is able to get around 56ish HP, after some head work, maybe porting (wasn't mentioned), 38mm carb and I think the 250sx cdi.  Made me reivaluate if I need a 500 again.  56 hp is pretty damn good.

Incidentally, I just got the June issue of Dirtbike magazine. In it is a test on the TM 300. They said it is the fastest of the 300s, equal to any 450 4stroke MX bike in acceleration. In comparison, the KTM 300 feels like a trials bike, according to them. I'd recommend getting this issue just for this test even though I generally have little regard for their magazine.

Im sure the GasGas and KTM can be made ALOT faster , i know i can an MX flywheel,Ignition, and easily change my compression to improve HP BUT then you start losing what these bikes are really good at - they are 2 strokes that hook up and dont wear you out as much as the MX versions....

The flywheel won't make it have any more or less HP. The post I read, said the KTM 300 with mods still had very good power. You can still use what is cool about KTM's. They have different springs for the Power Valve. They also have a map switch. So you can max out the HP, and still get good torque etc, by using the options KTM gives you.  I am so sold on KTM now it isn't even funny. Makes me mad I wasted all those years not knowing. My KTM is sweet.  Since it hasn't sold, I'm watching for a 300 cylinder.  Will port it while apart.  I'm pretty excited. Got the map switch done this weekend. Did a walmart special for $2.  LOL

KTM bikes are great! Lots of people are'nt crazy about them kind of like alot of people are'nt to crazy about Maicos' however my new 2011 KTM-300xc runs GREAT & I only have the yellow power valve spring installed that comes with the KTM stock & it has tons of torque for a stock bike! Soon I'll be putting the red PV spring on my ride & I'll let you know how well it runs then.Down the road I'm going to install a FMF "fatty" pipe & a FMF silencer plus a Boyesen carb insert & eventually when it's needed a Wiseco prolite piston/rings & I'm sure the ol' Katoom will have more than enough power & torque for me & the tight woods riding I do 85% of the time....... ;)

Man there are guys over at KTMtalk posting that they have 300+ hours on the stock 300 piston. That is insane.  Like to compare that too even a 450F.

after 3 KTM's for me and one for my son , in my opinion the GasGas is the better bike. mine comes with the dual ign switch on the handlebar allready by the way - and you can actually tell when you switch it, very very little difference on the KTM for some reason.

300xc KTMs have a lot of power, but run out of steam really quick.

What I'd like to check out is a 250sx with the factory 300mx kit. (They offer the 300xc or a 300sx kit.)

Or, the electric-start 250xc with 6 speeds and the 300mx kit.

Given the demand for 300 KTMs,I wouldn't tamper with something that sells out overnight.
