My dad (55 years old) bought a new bike
« on: March 22, 2011, 12:07:12 PM »
Like a lot of you, I don't hate four strokes, I just hate the rule advantage given to four strokes.  My dad raced 2 strokes in the 70's and early 80's but now likes four strokes power delivery for his type of riding and racing (dual sport races and enduro).  It's a KTM 450-XC-W.  It's pretty fun, but doesn't have the punch that my RM 250 has.  It's linear power is typical of a 450 and it's a nice looking bike!  I tries to convince him to get a KTM 300 2t but he wants the option to make this bike street legal and he likes the predictable power at his age.

Can't blame the guy, at least he' got a dirt bike. It will probably be a good bike for him. 4-strokes are great for a smooth power, they're just expensive and a booger to fix once they blow up.

450's dont go bang like 250F's either.
Unless you ride on the limiter.
There is not many people good enough to do that all day. ;)

It'll be a good bike for the riding he does.  I'll probably borrow it here and there when I feel like trail riding, since the ol' RM is more suited for the track.

Nothing wrong with a RM for trail riding.
I must have done close to 2000km on mine. ;D

Can't blame him for wanting more of a mellow powerband.

My dad is also right around that age, and he has a 450 as well.  His is a little different though, it's a '78 Maico. :D

Is this Maico a 440 or only a 400?  Well in all the confusion, I forgot myself.
But considering this is a 1978 Magnum, the best-handling bike in the world, you have to ask yourself one question.

If he wanted to get it legal, he shoulda just gotten the exc. it comes street legal. much props to your Dad, if I'm still around at 55 I intend to still be riding.
If a pair of 2" brass balls isn't working, I doubt that the 3" model will make much difference.

I'm sorry, but I have to admit to getting that from Larry the Cable Guy.
