Radiator Braces
« on: February 21, 2011, 07:42:42 PM »
I was knocked off my bike last weekend by an idiot who could not start his 250F. He rolled back as I was passing him knocking me down a bank. >:(
This was the result.

So I decided to not let it happen again.
Here are my new Braces I made out of 3mm plate with 8mm rod joining them together.
I looked at buying sum but didn't think the Devols were strong enough. I call these Kiwi Tuff.

The Radiators are sandwich between the 2 sides. The 8mm rods stop them from being crushed.

End result with the original plastics still fitted.
These are alot cheaper then a new radiator.

I work for myself so it was a home project. ;)
It was the left rad and yes it is hidden. :-X
It wasnt leaking so I put it back on for the time being.
I will order another but have just bought new Boots & Helmet and have run out of bike funds.

nice work. I run the Devols, they're stout. I would have made an aluminum brush guard though.
If a pair of 2" brass balls isn't working, I doubt that the 3" model will make much difference.

Nice job! Did you fab the braces with a shear/press/hole punch etc. in a shop or did you make them at home with hand tools and a vice?

I met Ted (I think that is his first name) Devol many years ago when he was starting out in a little garage in the back of his House in Seattle. ;D

Thanks guys.
I made them at work. I have a lath, welder.drill press etc.
I cut the holes with a hole saw and then cleaned them out with an air dremel.
Yes the Devols are good I just wanted to keep the rad fins as I have heard you loose cooling at slow speeds with front brush guards.
The Devols are made out of 2mm and I wanted something a bit stronger.
The other thing was I couldn't find out which Devold fitted my bike. I have heard KTM one fit, but which ones I was not sure.
It was just easier to make some then risk getting the wrong ones.

Wow, those look better than the high priced aftermarket braces!
