dogger315, I run a 250 ignition/flywheel on my CR500 Af/conversion and it makes it turn MUCH better for MX then the 500 ignition/flywheel.

Get the '83 Maico 490 Spider (or Sand Spider if you can find it) first.  The power is legendary, but not difficult to deal with, they say.  Of course, if you want to buy a bike made by a company with an on-record pro-four-stroke policy, that's your choice.  And I don't mean that sarcastically; it really is all up to you.  I'm just saying which '83 bike I'd go for.

Is this Maico a 440 or only a 400?  Well in all the confusion, I forgot myself.
But considering this is a 1978 Magnum, the best-handling bike in the world, you have to ask yourself one question.
Do you feel lucky, punk?

How old are you, by the way?  I think my dad started riding open-classers right around the time he was 16.  I'm looking to get into them soon myself, at 18.  And from my experience, they're really not to bad unless you're dumb enough to rap it out like a 125 without lots of experience.  From what I've gathered, the basic "way things work" is like this.

On a 125, you have to ride it to the balls to keep up with a casual 250.
On a 250, you have to ride it to the balls to keep up with a casual 500.
On a 500, you don't even have to try to keep up with... well... anyone.  When someone else is setting the pace, it's a very relaxing sort of experience.

ya, well, I ride a cr 125, and I am 16, but at the time, I didn't have a 125 yet, I had a 1984 xr 200, basically gutless, so, ya, I am actually quite happy I went with the 125

Targo, Is that 250 ignition a direct bolt on and plug in, or do some modifications need to be made?
Also, are you using the CDI box from the 250 or the 500?  Finally, what year 250 is the ignition from?

Service Honda has used up the remaining stock of completed CR500 engines so they have been
licensed by Honda to build their own.  Since each bike is custom built, I plan to specify the close
ratio transmission from a '92 and possibly this ignition swap when they build my engine.

Thanks for the info.

Mine's a 94 ignition and it's a total bolt on with the exception of the coil needing a different mount. Yes, I'm using the 250 CDI too.

With less rotating mass, the 250 set up allows the motor to spool down much faster when you get out of the throttle allowing the bike to lay over easier and not try to stand up in the corner. I ride it more like a very very [very] powerful 250.

Thanks Targo.  Sounds like a plan.  I think Service uses '01 spec engines and
electricals so I will use an '01 250 ignition for wiring harness compatibility and
the stock 500 coil will work just fine with this setup.  The only other mods
I plan to make to the motor will be a VForce III reed, 39.5 mm Keihin PWK,
Hinson clutch basket, '92 close ratio gears and a Pro Circuit pipe and silencer.
Everything in an effort to make the power more useable.
