Cheap way to get black rims for YZ250??
« on: September 18, 2010, 02:43:25 PM »
I was thinking of putting black wheels on my yz. But the problem is that they are sooo expensive for the excel brand. And in don't want to get a cheaper knock off brand because let's face it. Your wheels are like your bikes legs. And I don't want them breaking or bending in anyway. I thought of powder coating the ones that are on there but have heard that a really bad idea as they tend to chip and warp. So guys you got any suggestions???

Yes the powder is cheaper but after a year they tend to start chipping away. Which is fine cause you can just recoat them, but then it starts to cost more than getting new rims.
Depends if you know if you're going to have to buy some new rims soon anyways.
P.S.
Don't get black for your YZ, they are way too popular, if you want to stand out and still look badass, get blue! (Those look way better than black in my opinion)

I was actually thinking of blue :) would look way tricker than the simple black.  I was thinking about anodizing??? The wheels themselves are Excel silvers polished real shiny by me :)

Find a company that does aluminum anodizing and have them put your rims in with the next batch that matches the color you want. Anodizing will give you a very durable, long lasting finish.

Buy a set of Warp9 rims ($89 each if I remember correctly). They are as strong as stock rims. Lace them yourself, then sell your OEM rims on eBay. I don't see any other way being cheaper than that.

No thanks, "Warp" wheels? Does anyone else know why I wouldn't want to buy these lmao. And at under 100 bucks a wheel. That's alarmingly cheap. I'd be better off sticking with the high quality silver Excels that are currently on the bike.

Well I would be surprised if you could get them powder coated much cheaper than that per wheel. Seems like anything, no matter the size is at least $100 to get coated so I never do. I just paint it myself, LOL.

I wouldn't even consider powder coating. I can get that done myself. They need to be anodized if i want them to last or just get new ones that are already anodized. But Excel wants too much than i can afford right now.

I said $89 per RIM, not wheel! You'd have to lace it yourself. I've been using Warp9 wheels on my YZ125 since 2008 and have had great results. They are definitely as good as stockers.

Sorry for the confusion Sheriff, But when I said wheel I meant the rim alone. Okay, $89 per wheel, How much is it for the spokes and anything else necessary?

I believe a spoke set is $59, if yours are in good shape you can clean them and re-use them. They also have complete wheels including bearings and spacers, brake rotor and sprocket for $359 I think.
