The tide is turning smokers are making a come back
« on: August 13, 2010, 06:04:12 AM »
I was getting for a ride this weekend, and noticed my throttle cable had spot where the sheathing had worn thin.  Not wanting to risk a stuck throttle, I stopped at the local bike shop for a new one.  When the parts attendant asked what kind of bike, I answered I'm old school, I prefer smokers, I have a 2000 KTM 3000.  The two other parts attendants and a salesman asked me if I wanted to trade it in on a new 450...  to which I replied yea, when HELL freezes over...  The salesman laughed because he has a list of customers a mile long looking for smokers.  Most have 4 strokes that have issues, and the rest want to come back to the smoking section.  The salesman stated that if I traded my bike in, they wouldn't even bother to bring it in the shop, that it would be sold before I even unloaded it off my trailer.  He even went to far to say that the buyer would probably be waiting for me at the shop to show with the bike.

What really made me laugh was the "younger" parts attendant's.  When I mentioned I was old school and preferred 2 strokes, they both perked up and said yep, that's what I'm talking about...  both have switched and said they couldn't be happier with their choice.  Riding is fun again.

So I guess we're seeing the re-birth of the smoker.  More and more of the "younger" crowd are moving over to two strokes.  In today's work there's room for both 2 and 4 stroke machines, but I prefer to smoke em if ya got em...

I agree. The last month or two I have seen a lot of ads where people have 4 stokes (many needing top ends) and they want to trade for a two stroke. I have also seen that locally the price of two strokes is on the rise as their popularity increases.

That's pretty cool to hear enprovenzano...! Especially the younger guys going back to the 2-strokers! The last time I spoke to my local KTM dealer he told me that if & when I'm ready to buy a new 2-stroke that I'd better get a down payment on it asap because they're getting sold sometimes before the new bikes even make it to his shop! The only negative thing about that is 2-strokes are getting soo popular again that their prices are starting to increase! But the smokers are still cheaper over all compared to the 4-chokes.... :)

When and if production increases to fill the demand, we'll see prices drop again.  I suspect that this surge in prices is solely due to the big increase in demand, and the manufacturers weren't expecting it, so supply failed to keep up.  You don't have to be Murray Rothbard to know what happens to the prices when demand exceeds supply.

Is this Maico a 440 or only a 400?  Well in all the confusion, I forgot myself.
But considering this is a 1978 Magnum, the best-handling bike in the world, you have to ask yourself one question.
Do you feel lucky, punk?

Jetz I don't know who in the blue hell Murray Rothbard is but I do understand "Suppy & Demand" and I'm hoping our supply of smokers greatly increases in the very near future!.... ;)

People are lazy, they want a good result without working for it, a 450 on a local track riders make 1 shift, sometimes 2 if there a long straight away. They don,t have to slip the clutch and shift constantly, and be all over the bike like riding a 125. Lap times don,t lie, look at L.L. school boy 1-125 class, has lap times that puts them in the top 5 in 250a and 450a pro sport, that class is riders that raced nationals and supercross in the past. Riders used to buy a 4-st. so they could get a better result, but then everyone bought 4-st.s and there advantage was gone, then they quit riding. And the tracks now get very low turnouts, the local track that I,m a member at, didn,t work the track since May,s last race, and don,t cut the grass because the tressure says there,s no money for lawn mower gas. So the track is problebly going to shut down, because of the losers that bought 4-st.s, and don,t want to race,or ride, or work at the track.

I know 4-stroke 450's are pretty powerful bikes but I also believe that 4-strokes in general makes the Motocross racers a bit lazy like you said Super Trucker they only have to ride the bikes in a couple gears usually 2nd & 3rd gears are the ones used mostly so in my opinion it's like putting a auto clutch on a 2-stroke which I would NEVER do! I personally enjoy using all 5 or 6 gears when I ride and I often use my clutch to get my bike in the powerband when racing with a 4-choke rider... :P Although in my bikes case I have a 5 speed semi-close tranny but I have owned a few 125's with 6 speed gearboxes.
