Here's one to ponder, with regards to the AMA rules:
How in 'Effing Hell can KTM be able to use , on Tommy Searles '2011' SXF 250, a Carburettor instead of the 'homologated' EFI ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
This, to me, goes entirely against a 'production' rule.
A carb is an entirely different thing to EFI (well, to keep it simple, I'll treat it as such here - EFI that's been coming in is just glorified carburetion - perhaps that's how AMA and KTM techs would see it as being no problem..............). Perhaps it's allowed because a privateer could choose to remove the EFI and throw on an FCR?
The AMA must have changed the ruling about bike availability - In the Millville Pre- Show, Jason Weigant (Sp?), whilst talking to Sara Whitmore, had Sarah talk briefly about her new 011 - and it was said that they were not available to purchase . Plus, JW said something along the lines of "and you've got the better/newer bike, you've got the EFI, and Searles still got a carb"
I have nothing against KTM as such - they innovate a fair bit and still sell (and minimally develope) 2ts, which make the money for them to throw more at the 4ts.
But this is just utter BS. What is the point of a production rule that, from my research , is so flouted ( Suzuki racing 010s when No 010s were available is another)? ? ? ?
I posted this question at KTM talk - it was all fine and dandy amongst them , it appeared - but I think there would have been hell to pay if the same 'mix and match' / mongrel bike was being used by any of the big 4.
As I see it, an EFI system is not the same induction system as a FCR.
I can't see how KTM has been allowed to do this.
After all, we sure as hell can't see a TM, new Maico, CCM etc, etc or 2 cylinder Aprilia (I know, twins are banned in AMA - they were too in FIM, but Giuseppe changed that rule quickly - just as quickly as he / the FIM 'disappeared' the rules that were placed at the end of 08 , that allowed the 250 2ts back in MX2 for 2010) - because they are not 'homologated'. And they can't be bought of your nearby show room floor (well, at least for 99.999% of us

)
