That giant Preston Petty fender can't be helping cooling too much.  The 390 had one of those when we got it, and I don't know if someone did this or if the fender came that way, but it had a bunch of half-inch holes in the back of it so air would flow to the cylinder.  Don't know how much of a difference that would make, but I always thought that was interesting when I was four years old and looking straight up at the massive tower of bike before me.

Is this Maico a 440 or only a 400?  Well in all the confusion, I forgot myself.
But considering this is a 1978 Magnum, the best-handling bike in the world, you have to ask yourself one question.

opfermanmotors - I really like the combination rehearsal studio and workshop!! Do you play the drums?

When the bike was running it almost sounded like the clutch was slipping as you began to rev the bike...

Actually, that's my friend's place in PA and that's one of his bikes.  Yes, the clutch was slipping and the carb was not jetted.  I don't know if he ever fixed the clutch or not.  He actually plays guitar and has a drum set if anyone comes over to practice.  I don't play anything!

Yeah, well, I'm not used to people just taking off like that.  The group of riders I normally go around with have a sort of anti-dust system going that eliminates most of the problem.

What system would that be exactly? The "we don't have enough power to spin the rear wheel system" ;D
As for bigfoot, there were commercials on a while back from a beef jerky company called "messing with bigfoot" Jack Links maybe?Too funny if you can find it.
I'd rather a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy.

Oh yeah, those commercials played all the time.

And I've detailed the system elsewhere, but it involves riding in parallel (with protocols for what to do in case of obstacles) and a staggered group.

That wouldn't work around here. The middle guy would be fine but those riding parallel would be "staggered" from head to tree impacts :o

That particular system only applies to roads with enough room.  Whenever the road narrows or a trail comes up (which happens a lot, obviously) then we have to go down to single-file.
