The only thing holding back electric bikes is weight/price/inferior battery tech(Which is the cause of all three problems). The problem with the future of electric vehicles is that its only going to get more expensive...

Doubt that.

The "Lightning" guys are not "economy bike" manufactures. That's for sure. They are going top of the line. That said they are talking about 400HP equivalent out of their race bikes in the not too distant future (ouch, my 70HP honda 750 back in the day had plenty for me!).  Electric seems to make sense for (non endurance) race bikes. Cost be damned, range be damned. Want more power? toss a few more coils onto the armature. It just sucks the battery dry quicker.

How long till there is a viable 450 killer in electric? Twostrokies might want to be more worried about eMX'er than four strokes at some point... Not now but at some point.

And I hope a million dollars drops out of the sky into my lap.

Superbikes are already on the chopping block.

Brace yourselves.

I gotta say, I had no idea that it was even possible to package a motor/battery to do what that nutty lightning bike does. It pulls away from anything with pistons! Yes its a $35 grand (or more) toy at this point but I didn't think it was even possible. At least not in 2013.

i hope they die in a horrible battery acid induced explosion.

Stick a baseball card in the spokes and we can all get used to them a little faster  ;D

Battery development is expensive beyond belief. Supplying electricity to charge batteries national supply and demand would be insane as well, it would bankrupt the USA 10 times over..

People claiming that are either uneducated or have an agenda.

It simply doesn't add up.

The price saved in gasoline would by far offset the new infrastructure which would be either privatized or constructed on borrowed money. Either way, the trillions of dollars saved on gasoline over two decades which fully funds the upgraded power generation, distribution and supply costs.

The majority of our electricity comes from Coal/Crude oil/Natural Gas! What savings? Solar/wind are going bankrupt!

Battery tech will be phased out soon and replaced with supercapacitors.

it is feasible that in 10 years time, your bikes chassis will also be its battery, made from a graphene matrix.

That will bring the costs down big time.

Solar and wind are going bankrupt because they didnt bother to develop new technology in the last 10 years and as a result now the chinese have reverse engineered the current tech for half the price!

graphene is freaking awesome stuff. Once in mass production the possibilities are nigh on endless. Imagine a motorcycle that weighed less than 2 kgs... Where a 50 cc engine replaces a 500. Infastructure, farming, bullet proof vests that could stop a .50 barret round dead in its tracks and still be a tenth the weight of todays vests. So psyched for the future, glad its happening in my life time.

Not sure about the 2kg bikes though ;)

Problem is that Graphene at this point in time only has the energy storage capacity similar to a chemical battery. It may become better over time however.

The greatest think will be that instead of having a frame and batteries, you will instead have a chassis which is the battery which will reduce the bikes mass by the weight of the chassis (about 10-20kg)
