Maico Spider with type 55??
« on: July 01, 2013, 04:58:55 PM »
Just remembered an old Dirt Bike magazine article on replacing the standard Bing type 54 carb with a type 55 on the '83 Spiders. They stated that it made the 250 "run like a striped ape" and turned the 490 into "complete overkill". So, I'm just wondering if anyone has tried this hop-up? The 490 had barbaric power delivery in stock form if I remember correctly :o

Most people are using flat slide Mikunis on the younger big bore Maico's, although the Bings make more peak HP, the Mikuni's are easier starters, tunable cheap and available parts.
I had a '84 500 and they had a beautiful motor, better than the '81, smooth torqey and cuddly ;)

Type 55 would be 44mm correct? Might be overkill.

I own an 83 490 as well as newer Maicos and I'd personally stick with the Bing, good mileage and less sensitivity to elevation changes.

The type 55 Bing has a Magnesium body, and flow even better than the 54. I have seen only 38 40 and 44mm sizes. I used a type 55 44mm Bing on my Honda CR500 ( the Bing was also a hop up for CR's) to many hillclimb wins, including the 87 AMA amatuer top time, and the Muskegon Mi AMA Pro hillclimb in 1988.
Contrary to all the articles from way back about Bing's, the Bing's are way easier to jet right, easier starting, more consistent running, and more power can be had than the Mikuni replacements. I have a flat slide Mikuni on my 320 Maico, and it is a bear to start, and it runs different (too lean to too rich) from morning to afternnon, so the Bing is going back on.
The only issue with a Magnesium carb is they wear out faster than an aluminum carb in the slide area, also,  don't try to use ethanol or methanol fuels, it will destroy the magnesium.

I didn't know that Mikunis were used too. The Bing 55 that Dirt Bike used was a 40mm, as it said that the KTM495 came stock with one, which is a 40mm. I wish I had kept all my old DB magazines; there was so much good info and test articles in them!

I have a 93 320 with the Mueller USD air forks, yellow/blue seat, ect. The forks are the plushest USD forks I have ever tried. I can't believe these forks were not copied until recently.
