1982 RM80 Carb issues
« on: May 06, 2013, 02:47:27 AM »
Hey I'm helping one of my friends do a 1982 rm80 project. I know it's a mikuni carb and it's the stock one. I took it apart and the floats and everything looked fine. It had a 180 main jet on it. We put the carb on, turned the pet**** on and it started leaking out of the floatbowl overflow hose. We got it started and it idles really high and you give it about 1/8th throttle and it revs WAY up. Does anyone have any idea what the issue is? It sat for 15 years indoors before he got it. When I took it apart I didn't adjust anything, just cleaned all the  sand out of it. Any help is appreciated.  :)

Sounds like you have a leaking float valve.
Replace that and set the floats.

If you don't fall off you are not going hard enough

Check your magneto side crankshaft seal for leakage as well. You may be dealing with more then one issue.

Ok thanks we didn't even have the air filter in  :-[ :P Would that be the issue with the idle? And for the floats, should we replace the float valve AND the floats, or just the float valve?

Thanks for the help guys.  :)
