Just some wild musing......
« on: April 25, 2013, 04:53:08 AM »
I came across a ktm adventure bike. The big, 950 type, with a blown motor. The owner says it would be big bucks to repair or replace.
I'm just remembering the fmf / ktm / kx500 thread, and wondering if a kx500 motor could be mounted into the bike frame, and would it be worth the work and $$$$?
A 2t adventure bike , lighter than oem, ? less torque for sure. Enough power?
Any ideas on another 2t motor ?
Thoughts? Comments? Opinions?

Interesting idea. Would have enough power for sure. Would also fit in there with plenty of room to spare. Motor mount plates would probably be as big as your number plates.

What about an engine that would take up a little more space?

Suzuki T500 Titan motor.

Yamaha CT3, RT3, MX125, SC500, Toy Prius, Diesel F250 (it all balances out)

Nah(Don't get me wrong, love air two stroke street bikes), a 500 would be great. I'd even go as far as tossing a rz350 or banshee motor in. What would very cool is a ktm 550 haha

I'd throw a 1200cc Sportster engine in the KTM 950 chassis, sell it for big bucks to a HD fan and use some of the money to build a really nice KTM 550 based dual sport. I don't think the 950 frame geometry would be right, too bulky etc..

Sportster motors are about 3' long stem to stern. (that's probably an exaggeration but not by much). Would never fit. But that said I actually used to own a 1200cc sporty some time back. Thought I would give a HD a whirl because so many folks seemed to think they were cool. The problem was this was back in the day before helmet laws. When the other Harley riders would see me riding WITH a helmet they seemed to shy away from me like I had the plague. That was enough for me.

The bike, however, was pretty fun. TONS of torque. I always thought if that motor wasn't so darn huge in its packaging, and it didn't weigh as much as the Queen Mary, it would have made a fun dirt bike engine. Put it in 3rd gear (of 4) and throw away the shift lever kind of torque. I don't think it made any more horsepower than my 380. The rest of the bike? Nothing to write home about. Nothing really bad about it but nothing really good either. And the other Hog fans? -- a bunch of snobs. No thanks.
