Trustworthy Piston and Con-rod Brands??
« on: April 17, 2013, 09:08:47 PM »
Hi All, im looking to get a definitive list of what pistons/conrod brands as generally considered ''safe'' and unsafe to use.

I ask because i have a mitaka/royal conrod in my bike and i have just spent about 700 pound rebuilding the top and bottom end and transmission, i know its not worth leaving a cheapo one in for it to fail and f**k up for the sake of spending 150 more to get a proX rod in there..

(i believe royal and mitaka are the same as they have the same brand logo)

We always run Wiseco.

We will be running Wiseco Pistons and ProX rods in our Outdoor KTM's.
The OEM KTM Connecting rod is the weak point on the SX's

That is some good info to know.

Check this guy out, he is the real deal. Probably expensive, but supplies cranks to many factory teams. His name is Phil. Would be THE man to speak to regarding cranks and bottom ends.

I run wossner for the pistons. Single ring design so be prepared to do more rings if you go that way. Forged piston too, good stuff. Not horrendously expensive either.

My pro x has well over 50 hours and I have only put rings on it once. Great product in my opinion as far as crank I have a hot rod and while it's got the same amount of hours without fake I noticed more vibration in the bike. Not uncontrollable just more and others I've tales to have noticed the same with them. Next rebuild I will be looking for a different crank.

The smart thing to do is to get a hot rods rod (or similar) and then buy the absolute best big end bearing you can get your hands on (high quality silver plated).

Will make it a bullet proof combo.

you will find that a decent big end bearing will be $50! but it will be very good compared to the shitty ones that come with any of the rod kits (or OEM)

I'm currently running a Hot Rods Crank, Koyo Main Bearings, and a Vertex piston in my '01 Honda CR250. I've run Wiseco pistons for years without any issues. You can't go wrong with a ProX rod; however, a complete Hot Rods Crank may be just as cheap as buying the rod and having a shop replace it for you.

Running a hot rods crank right now, no issues with 40+ hours of use.

im looking to get a definitive list
Good luck with that one.  As you can see from the responses, as far as most people are concerned,
pretty much every brand available is considered "safe".

What I recommend, depends on the bike.  Some brands of OE are better than anything aftermarket.
Others, not so much.  It also depends on how the engine will be used and how often it will be torn
down for maintenance.  Most brands and OEs are "safe" to a certain extent.  Since you didn't list
any particulars about your bike (size, brand, use etc.), it's hard to offer opinions of what will work
best, or be "safe" as you requested

This. Every one has suggested almost every brand of piston I know of. No one has thrown matika (Or is it makita?) Or meteor into the mix yet though.
