2001 RM 125. There is a false neutral between 2nd and 3rd. I got a friend who can split the cases and fix anything but since Suzuki's are infamous ( I have a BIG get off story from 88 on a 250) for false neutral's I am hoping someone can point to a fix. My kid is getting very aggressive. What was once a minor issue is now a major one. Help, Spring break and Durhamtown right around the corner. Thanks, Mike.

After 20 years of pulling apart Suzuki gearboxes would be the first I've heard of them being anything other than utterly reliable gearboxes.

Things to check would be
shift drum (swap it)
bent shift forks
to much or too little end float in the shafts
Check against the fische or manual.

I would check the actual engagement dogs of the offending gears as well. You may have some wear there.

I have big feet and was always knocking my Zooks into neutral because the shifting was so light (maybe too much time on Euro bikes).

Thanks for the reply's. No offense meant for Suzuki gear boxes but this is my history. In 1980 I had a RM100 with a few extra neutrals. Heard that was normal as most had extras after some time. In 88 I bought a RM250. Was a nice bike but had a false neutral between 3rd and 4th. Popped out of gear on the face of a 70' table top. I specifically remember being upside down and thinking "I need to get away from the bike". Lived to tell the story and more to it. Now my kid has this 125. Only does it (It seems) between 2nd and 3rd under hard acceleration. Glad to hear that they have been good for the last 20 years so I can find something wrong rather than a gremlin that will never go away. Coming apart next week with the micro fishe open on a tablet.
As a side note this thing can carve a much sharper line than my 12 YZ125 and seems to give nothing up on stability. Have not ajusted the YZ much yet but I doubt it will ever corner like this thing. So much for being "outdated". 8)

Suzuki's have long been known for cranky gearboxes on some years and butter clutches an all years. As for repairs, what they said^^^^.There's no particular issue that way with the 01's as far as I know.

So after googling this over and over I checked with a friend who races GNCC/ISDE vet class for years on Suzuki's. He gave me the same answer all the searches gave me. It might be this, it might be that, try this or try that. Before tearing it apart I am going to run ATF in it and change several times to fluch out the gear box. May try 80W gear oil. In our conversation it came up that he has an 05 RM250 he has for sale. Bike was raced for two years, engine rebuilt, and was to be backup bike for 07. Never used again. What's the good and bad on this year? Maybe I just sell the 125 and put him on a 250.

1st try running AFT.  I've been running it for a long, long time...  I change it often, as its cheap.  Give it a try and see what happens.

As far as the 250...  hmmm that's a tuff one.  125's are so much fun, and a great bike to learn how to ride aggressively, but a 250.... hmmmm   :-

Well I tried the ATF and did not really believe it would do anything. It Worked!! There is still an occasional false neutral but I can not believe the difference it made. I met a guy with an 06 RM 125 that did the same thing from 2nd to 3rd. He said there is an aftermarket shift fork that will fix it for good but did not remember who makes it. Anyone know?
