Transmission Oil

What type of oil do I need to use in trans. on a 2001 yz250. I heard 4 stroke oil and 10w30 motor oil. Thanks for the help

Most people use 10W40 motor oil. DO NOT  use oil that says energy conserving. You can have clutch problems. Belray gear saver is excellent as it Motul transoil

Pinch some Canola oil off the wife.

I use gear saver but the Motul is good too,as well as other moto specific oils.Never use a car oil unless you get your hands on a batch that's about 15 yrs old and rated under SJ(if I remember right) otherwise the friction modifiers will ruin your clutch.
If you must use an auto oil,use Shell Rotella T.It's a little thick and I find makes shifting stiff but it's cheap and won't destroy anything.

I like ATF mineral pretty conveniently priced, cleans the clutch good and gets changed @ 8 hours.

That's only the energy conserving oils, which will have a a'starburst" type logo and say energy conserving in it.

Any motorcycle oil made for your trans. will do. I wouldn,t use anything else. The local shop had spectro, buy some get some free  that how it was in the great late 90,s. I tried rotella T  semi truck oil, 1 time in a 125  in 30 minutes it,s broke down, then your shifting gets sticky and won,t shift.

i can tell you this my  03 yz 250 prefers 10w 40 conventional and brand dont seem to matter, buy the cheapest crap and it seems work just as good. my yz 490 likes 50wt conventional. my 96 rm 125 however if i put 10 40 in it, the oil can be be toast in 5 minutes but if i put spectro 80 wt and i ride 2 or 3 times the oil looks brand new.

I run Clutch Saver SX transmission oil in my YZ. The only thing I noticed about it is it wears out pretty fast (5 hours or so) but it does do a good job while its fresh.

I have read recently in an article about a 58hp Gas Gas 300 that Fully Synthetic ATF is great stuff. Cheap and slick. ATF is designed for friction clutches and gears.

I've used ATF for years (over 30 years) with no issues, and great results.  BTW thanks for the reminder, I need to change the trans oil.  It's a cheap easy maintenance item.  I usually change mine every 5 rides.

I just changed mine, it takes all of 10 min...  I missed my self-imposed deadline of 5 rides (its been more like ten), as the oil was not the usually bright red, but more of a maroon color...  The good news is there was no water infiltration, and now it had fresh oil ready for all the abuse I can dish out...

The key point here is tranny oil is cheap and easy to change, so regardless of the brand you choose, change it often.
