Need some traction on hard pack.
« on: August 31, 2012, 12:17:45 AM »
How can I hook up better on hard pack (like dirt road) kind of terrain? I can't even lean into turns to sharp or else my rear tire want to wash out. I can even see that every time I'm on the gas the rear tire spins and spins. I am running Bridgestone MX404 in the rear. They were hooking up pretty good when they were brand new, but when they lost the sharp little edge they wont hook up anymore. Just curious if I can do something to change that, or if anyone has a better tire suggestion that can handle hard pack better?

PS. I am going to either Rocky Hill or Central Village NEXT weekend if anyone in the area will be there let me know  ;D

Or new tyres.

Or buy a 4 stroke.

shift up, smooth throttle, use clutch to smooth hit, butt on edge of seat when turning, lean bike over. on hardpacked terrain you're going to have to learn how to let it slide out a little, but controlling the slide. gonna have to get comfortable letting it hang out there.
i cant stress smooth throttle control and good body positioning enough. no tire is going to give you perfect traction on hard packed, it will ALWAYS slide

also, a heavier flywheel wouldn't hurt either, but its still going to slide around

Oh yeah, I forgot about that tool. That would probably work pretty well... I might order that in with my next parts shipment.

And I'm fine with the sliding in all, I can pretty much drift around a corner if I wanted to hahaha, but when I race on it accelerating is difficult when I'm spinning tires, but I could slow down the gas and try that. Thanks guys  :)

I'm not very keen on a fly wheel weight, I love the hard hitting power band. There's just something about it that makes riding fun and challenging for me. I mean if I was strictly a woods racer than I would probably have one on there, but when I go to the track I do like the snap. Thanks for the suggestion though. I know there are sometimes I wish I had one, like when whiskey throttle in the woods happens  ;D

fyi, doug henry rode with a heavier flywheel
and quite a few other pros did too, sx and mx

so you're not being "a girl" if you run one  :-*

Thats what's supposed to happen, lean into it steer out of it and get on the gas. dirt roads are great fun, hard on your tires though.

Yeah it is hard on the tire... The rear mostly because it is always spinning. Those HP4's look cool  :o I will have to try those eventually. And as for the flywheel weight, I will probably put one on when I start strictly woods racing, which I don't see happening for a little while. It is good to have for the future though  ;D

Dont over inflate your tires... 12 psi is plenty for what your riding in.

try short shifting as well and use the torque to pull through the gears rather than the horsepower. i generally do that on hardpack in 2nd and sometimes 3rd gear

Tire pressure is the key, keep it as low as possible which allows the flex and bite.

Have you had a bike with a fly wheel weight on before? Because I used to hate the idea of 'taming the power' but this exc came with one and to be honest you barely notice any difference to a normal motocross bike in the dry but in the wet you can run higher gears (4th through turns) without risking a stall and while ou will still spin slightly you dont get anything like a motocrosser.

Other than that I would also say try softening your suspension, you should try and run it as soft as possible without being bottoming out on all the jumps.

No, I have never raced a bike with a flywheel weight, I wouldn't mind trying it though. And yeah my tire pressure is already pretty soft, I may drop a couple more PSI and see what happens. My suspension is pretty soft already too, I'm only 150 ish so I don't need stiff suspension. Thanks guys, I will try these ideas and let you know what happens  ;D
