the 2011 ktm 150sx makes 40 hp the 2012 makes 38 hp

i dont know what eric gorr can get out of the yz in terms of power but MXA did a test of the 144 using the GYTR barrel and it still had nothing for the KTM.

I would go the KTM, the only place the YZ is better is in the suspension but some valving on the KTM and you will have a better bike all round, also you will be supporting a manufacturer that actually puts money into 2 strokes and not just make money out of them

I have owned both a 2009 ktm 150sx and 2 yz 125's ( 1 i built to a 144 with an athena kit).  The ktm hands down has more oomph.

the thing about the ktm is they already have good porting. back in 04 ktm started building motors after the factory specs so they got a huge bump back then. if you go for th yz id say go big and do the bore and stroke for a 144. if you increase the stroke you can use a smaller piston instead of what most big bore 144 kits do by just a big piston so itll help reliability but when you have to do the bottom the crank would have to be sent off you wouldnt be able to by one off the shelf

would i have to run race gas if i did the bore and stroke? Also what do do you mean ill have to send it out for a bottom end rebuild

Put your 150 or 144 on the dyno you won't see anything like 40HP even on a optimistic dyno. If you want to beat 250F's you have to add area under the curve.

running race gas is dependant upon your compression ratio. stock bikes can use straight 91 or even higher octane gas( most tuners recommend at least 50/50 for stocks) where as a race motor with higher compression needs more octane to avoid detonation. now a days no one makes a normal "stroker" crank. you would have to send it out because the crank pin needs to relocated which involves some serious machining. my local tuner only knew of one guy in the area that could/would do it. he would remove the pin then fill it with material then drill another hole to relocate the rod. the only major tuners  Maxpower and eric gorr that are reputable i believe the first with do stroking where as EG only does the bore.

i was told when asking about bore kits to go with a 134 then do everything else you would to a 125. if you want a 144 on the cheaper side go with eric gore ive only heard good things and max power if you want a bore and stroker. their 144 kits are not as cheap though

do you guys think i should just quit being a baby and get a 250 2 stroke? Im just afraid that it may be to much power and more weight than my 250f. I also want to get back out in the dunes and if i take a modded yz125 it may be less reliable? Or should i just get a ktm 150sx, maybe even a 200sx, but they are hard to find

no, i think you should ride what you feel comfortable on, 250's are a handful for the average rider although, with a heavier 11 or 13 oz flywheel they are quite a big easier to manage, we have a yz250 that has a flywheel on it and a little taller gearing to make it easier to ride and it does exactly that, it smooths the hit out a little and makes the bike much easier to handle vs the tire spinning arm ripping power of the stock 250 , and the 125 will teach you so much about yourself and the bike, it'll allow you to push harder and ride longer, and it'll teach you great riding techniques to keep your speed up and not make mistakes, in any situation the dunes will destroy a bike, 2 or 4 stroke, if you're just going to get a bike to destroy in the dunes then buy a cheap 10 year old bike and make it ride able, no reason spending 4g on a newer nicer bike if its just going to get trashed, because the sand gets everywhere, in the bearings, and in every little nook and cranny possible. but a 125 with a pipe/silencer/reeds won't be any less reliable than the stock one

Just get a 250, put a new top end in it and go have fun.  You don't have to turn the throttle more then your comfortable with.  You can always put a steahly(sp) flywheel weight on it to help mellow it out...  125's are great, but there's just something about a 250 that always makes me smile...

A 250 is something you can get used to. Just know how to manage the power, and worse comes to worse, sit on the gas tank  ;D
