madscientist, that sounds like a great article for the main site!

Write it up and we'll polish it up and show it off.

as for my Maico, it's one of the bikes I drooled when I started racing 125 class in '81, a 490. I found it adverted by a guy in Westminster,Md. Mine is an '82 Enduro model. Of course there are others, like my 260LQ, RMs,both 125s,and a 250.The old YZs, are coming soon! A '77 250,and '78 125 !I can't wait to ride them!If anyone has knowledge of any performance goodies for these, let me know. I just picked up an aluminum swing-arm for the 250.Would like to find Simons,Fox,DG,etc... I'll post up the eye candy when they're done.Weeks...

Yes, Maico had their legendary 501, even before the 440 came out.  When Super Hunky tested it back in the day, he said it would revolutionize our ideas of how the Marianas Trench was formed.  In fact, he managed to recreate a number of new such trenches on the track on test day using the 501.  Looking at Maico's dyno charts for the '73 model, it actually out-revs the 250.  If there was any room left in the garage, a 501 would be next on my dad's wish list.  But of course, there's not any room.

Is this Maico a 440 or only a 400?  Well in all the confusion, I forgot myself.
But considering this is a 1978 Magnum, the best-handling bike in the world, you have to ask yourself one question.
Do you feel lucky, punk?
