Well be safe man. That can be a pretty dangerous profession. I've seen that show about logging on the Discovery channel  ;D
Ha, Axemen. That program was more like a how not to log tutorial.
I know first hand how dangerous, a couple years ago i got squashed by a falling tree and broke my back and ribs and collapsed lung. Was pinned under the tree for almost an hour and had to dig my way out.
Had to get my spine fused, but all good now.

When I started logging the first thing I was taught was that a log will never give you a second chance.Second was to never stand in the bite of a cable. To this day I never compromise on safety.I just got a new Dolmar PS6400 going and I'll have to tune it around the emissions thing, seems like a nice saw so far.

Holly crap your lucky TotalNZ, I always expected a tree to do the worst thing,so I made sure nothing would catch on my boots when using my emergency escape-jump back. The only protective gear we had was a hard hat,I have 38 stitches on the inside of my knee. The only tree work now, is on my Dad,s farm in the winter. We get downed trees  out of the woods, for fire wood. I wish I could put some weight on, currant job I work 15 hour days, then paper work, trip planning, call customers for directions, 1 shower a week, there,s no time to get fat. haha  About 30 pounds of butt cheeks  would be perfect, for a driving a truck though. ;D

Hey TMKIWI,having sold your business, what will your next excellent adventure be? ::)

I am going to go back to engineering. Fabrication & welding.
There are alot of jobs going with very good pay.
I can earn alot more money without the stress of morgages and staff. :)
You guys think the motorcycle industry is in trouble, you should try the marine industry. :(
The first thing to go when the economy tanks is a mans boat.
Luckerly I have built up a good network of people over the years and getting a job for me is easy.
I might even end up on the oil rigs ( I have my ticket )and was offered a job 2 weeks back.
Once my hand heals i will be all go. ;D
Another exciting chapter in life waits ahead.
If you don't fall off you are not going hard enough

You know what they say about being self employed - you only work half the day. It's up to you to decide which 12 hours you want to work. :-X

What do I do all day? -work on cars-and dream of absolutely anything else  :(
For those that think working in the woods sounds like fun, you're right-and it's brutal.
I did it for a few years and had a great time, but I was far younger then.At my age now,I have my doubts if I could do it full time-especially in the winter slipping and sliding on the ice and slogging through deep snow.
It's the only job I've had where I'd come home from work in the winter into a warm house, prep my gear for the next day, come sit at the table, look down at my supper and immediately doze off. :D
Kudo's to you TotalNZ for still doing it.
Chainsaw operators around here have long been getting fewer and farther between with everything going more mechanized. Now that the forestry industry has crapped out here, maybe smaller operations will become more the norm again though the way the big companies are clearing it now to maintain profits,it remains to be seen if anything will be left.

Right now I'm sitting at a computer trying to make sense some bone-head electrical engineer's printed circuit board design so I can come up with a quote to get it built.  You want to talk about logging being a dying industry, try PCB manufacturing.  Unless it has to be extremely quick-turn or for the US Gov't, it is just about all done out of the US now.  20 years ago when I was fresh out of college, this industry was booming, figured I'd be able to retire at 50......

The thing about  today's economy is that you continually have to be reinventing yourself.
