You may be out of luck.ATK was supposed to offer a larger tank but I'm not sure if they followed through on it.I made an aluminum tank for my Merkle 500,lots of work but it turned out well. :D

Seems that way, Clarke Manufacturing sent me this:

Quote
I am familiar with this bike and am positive we do not have anything remotely close to fitting it

Clarke mfg co.

And just gas tanks.com said maybe a XR650L tank may fit, but not so sure on that one.  Ya, definately don't want to go metal tank though cause I'd like to have something that won't dent if the bike falls.

With rad guards and shrouds the metal tank is pretty well protected.I have yet to dent the tank and that includes getting smoked by a kid on a KTM 520. :o

How did you get smoked by a KTM 520 on a Maico?

The 520 stands for cubic inches?  That would do it.

Is this Maico a 440 or only a 400?  Well in all the confusion, I forgot myself.
But considering this is a 1978 Magnum, the best-handling bike in the world, you have to ask yourself one question.

No more vids please.I'm supposed to be getting some work done around here :D
Another tank option for you to consider.Back when I had my first KTM they offered an aux tank that replaced your rear number plate. There was a company that sold them for jap bikes as I saw one in a mag on a Yamaha-so,if you have yamaha side panels,it's a possibility.
I'd rather a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy.

If a pair of 2" brass balls isn't working, I doubt that the 3" model will make much difference.

I have seen these ones:

My problem with those is that you can't slip off the back of the bike if you loop out!

The side number plate ones are a good option, but they make them all for the left side!  That's where my exhaust is, I need it for the right side

Too bad.Maybe you can make a big curl in your exhaust like the new YZF450's and route it out the other side so you can use the plate tank. :D
The only issue I see with the front and rear fender mounts is that that's a lot of shifting weight carried high.
On the other hand,I once strapped two 2l coke bottles to the front plate of my SX on a long ride once. They looked almost factory TM ;D

I'm a fan of carrying a backpack with a couple of Gatorade bottles full of gas.  Just stop over at some point after you've burned some gas and pour them in the tank.  If you plan on doing a lot of falling down (which seems to be fairly popular for some reason) then this plan probably isn't for you.

Well we all don't just cruise around in formation on dirt roads, so that plan IS probably only good for you  :o   :D .
