08 YZ250 steering head
« on: October 18, 2010, 11:27:51 AM »
Anyone know how to remove the lower steering bearing from the stem? The one on top comes right off but the lower one seems to be a tight fit or pressed on. Both need replacing so I need to get it off. Thanks.

Yes, they are pressed on.
My local shop charges $15 for the removal of the old bearing and pressing on a new one that I supply.

There are some do-it-yourself ways but unless you are handy with hand and power tools I am hesitant to explain lol. i don't want to be responisble for your ruining your steering stem due to my advice  :D

Safest bet is listen to PPMS's advice. My local shops SUCK so I do all my own work, but if you have a shop you like/trust definitely give them the job.

Remove your lower tapered (Timken) steering head bearing by first breaking the roller bearing cage and removing all the individual rollers. Then turn the lower triple clamp/stem upside down, heat the inner bearing race with a torch and it should fall off. Sometimes I've had to carefully grind through a stubborn inner race to remove it.

Or you can run a arc/mig weld around the bearing surface of the outer race which will shrink it and it will fall out.
Dont try this if you dont know how.

If you don't fall off you are not going hard enough
