Plastic Conversion
« on: July 26, 2012, 06:04:48 AM »
I bought the restyled plastics for the YZ's and was going to buy a 125 to build.  Here is the thing, my buddy has a 01 YZ 125 which is mint, original everything, not a scratch on the plastic, has original tires which I would label in perfect shape except the rear has dry rotted, anyways it is like buying a showroom new 01.  I like the 01 because of the seat height.  Now I know I can make the brackets to put 02 and up tank and shrouds on, front fender and front plate is no big deal.  Has anyone ever put the rear fender and side panels on.  I have read online alot of speculation but not any facts.  Some people say you just need an 02 air box, or you need a subframe and airbox and they bolt right up?  Does anyone know for a fact if it can be done?  If I do need a subframe is it a direct bolt on, if not how much fab would I need to do?

When I compared: http://www.motosport.com/dirtbike/oem-parts/YAMAHA/2001/YZ125/FENDER

to: http://www.motosport.com/dirtbike/oem-parts/YAMAHA/2002/YZ125/FENDER

I noticed that the fenders are quite different in shape and where the bottom part of the fender caresses around the subframe so that will look quite out of place. Also, it looks like the holes for the back end of the seat are placed differently too. Its hard to see though so don't quote me on it. I'd study those two diagrams and maybe even email motosport see if they can take a closer look. It'd be a pain if you bought it only to find you'll need to replace your seat and subframe too.

Good luck mate

Stusmoke -  Thanks man, I can see what you mean.  I don't really mind replacing my subframe and seat, but I don't know if a 02 subframe would even fit on an 01

No worries mate. Yeah it might not, that could present a problem. I'd recommend having a chat to SachsGS or Ford theres heaps of others on here that would be able to tell you right off the top of their head. Looking at hte OEM diagrams on motosport again the subframe on the 02 looks a little shorter but looks like it mounts in the same places. However they also appear to share the same frame.

So I'd reckon if you replaced your subframe and seat to match the 02, you can put the rear fender on without any mishaps or weird looking bulges. Thats just my opinion though. Some other guys on here would be able to tell you right off the top of their head if it'll work on not. You should give Ford or SachsGS a message. Theres heaps of others but I can't remember their forum names sorry.
