01 CR125 Project

My build starts with a min bike, yes a mini bike. My neighbor pushed his kids? mini bike over to me one day last fall and said ?It?s all yours. If not, I will throw it away tomorrow.? The bike was covered in mud and did not run. His kids ran it into the ground and I am sure that they never washed the thing.

I found a 5.5hp Honda motor for cheap on Ebay. Purchased a generic clutch and had it running this winter. After I let me neighbor ride it and he declined my offer to sell it back, I decided to see what I could swap for the mini bike. This is where the CR 125 enters the picture.

The past owner purchased the bike for the engine. He installed it in a modified blaster chassis and offered the rolling chassis on Craigslist with an interest in trades. I looked at the ad for several weeks and finally decided to give him a call and offer the mini bike as a trade. To my surprise, it was still available, and he was interested.

When I picked up the chassis, it was covered in mud and weeds from his ?test ride?. I do not know why I keep ending up with bikes covered in mud?maybe I am just an optimist. Well I brought it home and hosed it off in the same afternoon, and the bike was in fairly decent condition for being 11 years old. However, I still had a lot of work to do?

After the first bath?

My search for the engine again turned to Ebay and Craigslist. The weekend I brought the bike home, I found an engine in the same town for dirt cheap. When I called the seller, I was informed that he just sold it and he practically gave it away. So the quest continued.

After some research, I determined that the engine from a 1998 and up would fit the chassis. This opened my options up and I continued my search?

Several weeks ago, I found a complete engine on Craigslist for a reasonable price. The only downside was that the motor was over 4 hours south of home. I made the call, and the owner was willing to ship the motor. The only catch was that he was working out of town and he did not know when he would be home to ship the engine. On top of that, he would not hold the engine for me if someone was willing to buy it locally. I kept in contact with the seller and kept my fingers crossed that he would not sell the engine locally. At the same time I watched similar items on Ebay sell for twice as much as his asking price.

Two weeks later, I was sitting at my desk and I hear a fellow Moto guy talking about a trip down south. I jump up from my desk and asked if he would be willing to help me out. Once he found out what I had in mind, he offered to pick up the engine for me. Now the project is starting to build momentum?.

Here are a few pics of how the bike sits now. My motor deal included the carburetor, electrical, and pipe. The top end appears to be in good shape and I was informed that it was recently replaced?we will see how long it last. Now I will be looking for a deal on the radiators and hardware required to wrap this thing up??BRAAAAAAP!

I have just over $600 into this bike at this point and I had about $300 into the minibike. I need to pick up a few more small things to have it up and running.
