Shorty's add snap off the bottom and mid range but you can lose a bit of over rev. The longer mufflers usually make the power more linear. As for shortening them yourself it's pretty easy, I used to take about 40mm of my kx 125's.

My muffler (TM300en) has been shortened 100mm to match the mx muffler.
Common mod on the en's.

What racer x said.

In back to back testing, I've never been able to tell any difference.

The shorty looks cooler and makes more noise :) makes the throttle response a little snappier

Still using the stock mounts.

A  shorty  has  less  back pressure,  with  lower  engine  temps  with  long  motos.  That,s  why  the pro,s   used   short  silencer,s  even  tho  you   loose   some top end  power.
