2 Stroke vs. 4 Stroke
« on: March 31, 2010, 04:48:49 AM »
Since some of you are "new' to the TSM site, I want to "feature" one of the archived articles every once in a while.

This chestnut is from Moto-X Magazine and a direct comparison between the two-stroke and the four... a very worthwhile read.

A great article!  I liked it more than my own.  But this line made me mad.

If you weighed up the other modes of transport your average motocross rider used in a year, like the car, the bus, or [particularly] the jumbo jet, then the relative impact of his or her two-stroke emissions would be negligible to say the least.

It's that jumbo-jet part.  I'm sick of people rattling on and on about how bad airplanes are for the environment.  Listen, I'll grant than a 747 only does a few hundred feet to the gallon.  However, it more than makes up for it in the number of Toyota Priuses taken off the road.  To the tune of 100 miles per gallon per passenger.  And on that topic, it's also interesting to note that a '40s steam engine got about 50 miles per gallon per passenger, which is less than 25% down from today.  Of course, that doesn't count the fact that they got 0.5 m/g/p in water, on top of the fuel.  Yeah, this is just one of those topics I always respond to, because I did a research paper on the Toyota Prius last year.  The paper before that was on Bigfoot. :P

Other than that, it was a great read, although after acknowledging that 250 vs 450 was unfair, they did proceed to compare them in that manner, which was kind of annoying.

Is this Maico a 440 or only a 400?  Well in all the confusion, I forgot myself.
But considering this is a 1978 Magnum, the best-handling bike in the world, you have to ask yourself one question.
Do you feel lucky, punk?
